M&m's Old Habits Die Hard. Help! I Feel So Guilty

Recommended Posts

So I am almost 5 weeks out and I have been by the book to the T. Today I was at a friends house and they had dip and then pretzle nuggets and of course the chocolate m&m's. I sat there and was so good just drinking my Water, I decided if i eat a few of the chocolate it wont hurt becuawse it will melt in my mouth. so i ate them and they were good. then i was thinking well a pretzle and the chocolate would be good together so I started eating an eating and eating.. I was of course chewing it till it was mush and then the next thing i knew i was drinking to wash it down. After about an hour of doing this I felt sick and soooooo GUILTY. It was insaine. I guess I can just tell my self I wont do that but I felt like I used to. I would have normally eaten so much of the snaky type food. It was just so dissapointing that I let myself get back into this habit. I realized that I really do have to work on this.

Sounds like you have learned a valuable lesson about yourself and your past eating habits. Don't beat yourself up.... we're all human.

Yup, they operate on our stomachs, not our heads...that part is up to us.

Eating the m&ms or the pretzels probably wasn't a good idea this early, but you did it, so it's past. Coping strategies are what you need for the future, though. I'm the queen of them, only my addiction is baked cheetos. OMG, I can, and will, eat a whole giant bag at one sitting. So, I don't keep them in the house. If I do buy them, I make it a small, one serving bag, and I sit down and deliberately enjoy every single cheeto in that little bag. Then I do NOT repeat that experience for as long as I can stand it, usually about a month! LOL

When out and about, I try to get a drink and stay far away from foods that I know tempt me. The m&ms would have gotten me too. But, I have learned to take a small handful and WALK AWAY FROM THE BOWL before I eat them. Then I try to make them last as long as possible, savoring the taste. BTW, M&Ms don't taste all that great when you really pay attention to their taste, at least for me.

Move on, try to avoid being in a similar situation, and do better tomorrow. You'll figure out how to avoid your temptations as time goes on, or at least how to manage them better. :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
