Hello all, I was all ready for my sleeve, did the diet and all the pre-op stuff and as soon as I went under anesthesia, my heart went into AFib (abnormal beat) so they did not do the surgery. Now I'm under the care of a cardiologist. Both the surgeon and cardiologist feel it is safe for me to have my sleeve done next week, but now I am scared to go under. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated.

My mom has had Afib for about 7 years, she didn't have surgery ever until about 3 years after being diagnosed. She did have to get clearance from her cardiologist but she did fine (she had a wedge resection for lung cancer, so pretty major). They will monitor you closely and it is good that they know this now.

I can understand your concerns.

I had a similar experience when I had my gallbladder out years ago. It wasn't AFIB, but tachycardia. When I was put under my heart started beating way too fast and they couldn't get it slowed so they brought me out off the anethesia and put me CCU for a couple days. Nothing else happened and I had my gallbladder removed two weeks later. I was so scared. Since then I've had other surgeries and never had a problem since.... so not sure what happened that day.

My advice would be to get all the information you can from your doctors and have them explain why they think this happened and why the surgery is ok....... from that you can make a decision that is best for you.

My best to you.... hope it all works out!

Big hugs!!!!!

Thanks, I'm just apprehensive about going under the aneatesia now. I feel like putting the surgery off for a little while until I feel comfortable about it.

Then that's exactly what you should do..... never have the surgery unless you are comfortable having it.

Did you get a cardiac clearance before they attempted the surgery? Some doctors require it and others don't.

I don't think the doctors would allow you to have the surgery if there was anything at all that they thought could pose further risk and complcations. However, I agree you need to feel ready and comfortable so I'd say go with your gut feeling and wait until you feel ready and all your concerns are adressed.

I got a full workup and was healthy. Thanks all I think I just need a little time to wrap my head around this. At least i've already lost about 35# and will continue the pre-op diet. Not looking forward to the liguid diet again!

Personally, I believe that I wouldn't put off the surgery. If I didn't put it off and had the surgery now, I would worry until they put me under anesthesia. If I did put it off and had the surgery later, I would still worry until they put me under anesthesia. Having it now means less time to worry. Of course, it is not me.

hi there, i'm so very sorry you had to go through this situation. Getting all hyped, surgery room, then to have the rug pulled from under you. i just can't imagine how that must have made you felt. It is good they "pulled" the plug though since they had concerens, case they had any fears, but what a dissapointment it must have felt like when you left OR and realized nothing had been done.

Ok, enough of the bad, which can't be changed.

It was good they saw a possible problem, stopping the intended surgery. You don't want a doubt in your surgeons mind that something could go wrong. Better safe than sorrry. Old cliche' but true.

I understand you being "concerned" going into the OR again for the Sleeve. I do get your fears, and possibly wanting to delay surgery til you feel more mentally prepared.

I do hope you can overcome these thoughts over the next week. Things in the OR this time should be fine, but again i do unterstand your feelings, well actually no one can totally understand since we haven't been in your shoes. They have a slot for you in the next week, i would grab it.

Hope you do go through with things for the surgery - the sooner the better in Sleeveland - then the journey begins, and you will be happy.

best in your pending surgery

kathy

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
