I had surgery on Wednesday 5/16. When the did the sleeve, they found and repaired a hiatal hernia. I don't have much tummy pain outside gas bubbles but my middle/upper back is KILLING me! liquid tylonal with codeine doesn't offer much help. I've been up walking a lot too. Anyone else have this problem? How do I help it?

I believe that's gas pains that you are experiencing. Get up and walk as much as you can. Even if it's up and down the hallway. They also have gas x strips you can take. Has your DR. given you anything for acid? That may help as well.

I had back pain for a long time too, maybe a month. It still aches occasionally. I also had a hiatal hernia repair, and I don't know if it is related.

My best explanation is that I think I was avoiding the use of my abdominal muscles which put a strain on my back.

Hope you feel better soon, try to relax.

Did they see the hernia during your egd?

I've been walking like crazy. In the hospital the nurses even yelled at me to sit a couple times because I kept doing too many laps and my bp was going in the 150s. I slept with a heating pad for a while and that seemed to atleast take the edge off, hopefully it lasts.

They didnt see the hernia when I went for my endoscopy, but that was also done in February. I woke up and it was just kinda like SURPRISE! We threw in a 2-for-1 (even though youll get charged both  lol)

Edit: And yes, I've been taking Gas-X strips, although how many should I be taking?? I took 4 yesterday. And the doctor prescribed me PrevAcid, which is helping fantastically with the elephant sitting on my chest in the morning!

My back killed me the first week after surgery- like a hot poker to the mid-back. Nothing helped- not heating pads, not flat floor, not the Loritab...

It felt like a good backbend spine stretch or pop would help- but couldn't do it for fear of ripping my incisions open! It hurt mre than any of the surgery sites did.

The good news is that I havent felt that way since. I had a Hiatal repair too and think it was my back muscles working to compromise for what my stomach muscles couldn't do.

I hate to say it- but you may have to grin and bear it- of course if it's awful pain, call your Dr. immediately (or get your SO to give you a mega back rub!)

It gets better- with each minute that passes and each ounce we drop, it gets easier and more normal.

So the back pain... Having a shortness of breath last night and this morning on top of it, dr office said go to the er. Admitted for observation over night because: white blood cell count is high, liver slightly inflamed, and the back pain, part of my spleen isn't getting blood. I'm seriously regretting this surgery right now!!!!!!!!
