What Is A "normal" Weight?

Recommended Posts

I am asking this question because people keep asking me "what is your goal" I have no idea!!!!

am 5 ft 8, started off at 245 pounds and now 50 pounds down, but what am i supposed to be heading for, have had people tell me you are a large black woman so you can't be less than 180 pounds but if i go according to BMI scales, my maximum weight should be 164 for a max BMI of 25, any ideas anyone? i carry a lot of weight around my middle and this is where it is not budging from yet.

I plan to stop losing when I hit a normal/healthy BMI, I am now overweight at 29% BMI at 189 lbs, started at 250 also and plan to go down to 21 or 22% body fat. I no longer focus on the scale but instead look at my BMI. But, I will see how I feel and how I look at 22% body fat and decide. I am wearing size 7 jeans now so it just depends because I don't want to shrink down to a size 1 or 2 but again I will see as the weight comes down. Take Care.

When I met with my surgeon I asked if there was a "goal" weight. He stated their philosphy is not to set a goal weight, but to Celebrate the success which is reached. I don't want to be controlled with the thought of getting to a certain weight and being overly frustrated by not meeting that. I have my ideal goals in my mind, but I have to say...anything will be better than my 51.3 starting BMI!!!

I'd be more inclined to believe the BMI chart than the 180 pound idea. If you took a look at me you could say that I'm a big Scandinavian man but, at nearly 5' 11" i've weighed as little as 147 pounds and I was not suffering a bit from being too thin. I doubt that the 57 year old me will ever be as slim as the 25 year old me but that won't keep me from working hard to lose as much as I reasonably can.

I can tell you that i am 5 7 and i weighed 305 when i started. I used to weith that and then i lost 100lbs on my own so i was around 200. People told me that if i lost anumore weight i would be too skinny but i know that is still considered obese. I totally get your confusion. I would just follow the rules and work out and your body will stop where its supposed to be i think

Yep, this has been stressed to me as well. I have a goal (one-derland!) but I need to sit down and do smaller chunks to work towards once I'm on the losers bench.

Some people use their lowest adult weight, if that helps.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
