Exhaustion Lasts How Long?

I Know everyone is different and some fortunate ones were walking 5miles 3 days out. I had that high hope but alas I'm 5d post op, got the child off to school, started a load of laundry, ate 1/2 my Protein Soup, and now need a catnap before I walk my court 3x. Realistically, how long should I expect no getup and go?

Mine lasted about 3 weeks. Probably 4 weeks until I was completely "me." My stamina is still not what it was pre-op, but I only really notice it on stairs.

OMG, you are only 5 days post surgery. what are you doing with all that work going on? are you trying to set a record in sleeveland ;) take a breath, your kids are in school, rest, lay down - you need to give your body a break.

The laundry can wait. You are more important, really. You did this surgery for you, now you must take care of YOU. Hopefully someone can give you a hand. Mom/friend/hubby?

But take things in stride. If there is no one to help, oh well, the house can wait. You must take care of you. When you really have to get back to house cleaning, take it slow.

As you said, everyone is different in there recuperation, it can take anywhere from bouncing up at the beginning, to one, two or more weeks to feel better before you run around the block. But thats ok - if it takes a while, rest etc. you are still so early in the game, you had major surgery - give yourself a break. - Don't rush into anything.

What a good question...... I have been wondering the same thing. I have weakness too and have been wondering when it will go away.

If you had lost your tummy another way, you would probably qualify for benefits and such for an injury and surgery...take time and rest. Especially if you body is telling you to do so.

When you spend a lot of time on this and other forums, you can lose sight of what a serious surgery this is. Again - take your time.

I was one of those walking 5 miles on day 3, but believe me, that didn't last. I went back to work a couple days later and had to leave at 2:00 because I couldn't keep my eyes open (I have a desk job). I was like that for a week before I could stay at work all day, but still took naps everyday when I got home from work (kids, 6 & 8 ... I love my wife!) About a month of doing this, I talked to my NUT about fatigue and she advised me to add more veggies to my diet to increase my carbs. You need carbs for energy. I did as she advised and I noticed a huge change.

Now, you're still early out, so adding carbs really isn't an option as I'm sure you're struggling just to get in your liquids and Protein, but the day will come (and soon) where you are getting closer to those goals. Bottom line, now is not the time to be implementing a low-carb diet. I know it has been shoved into our heads that low-carb is the only way to lose weight, or to lose weight quicker, but believe me, you just had 85% of your stomach removed. You will lose weight. This is not a race.

Ya, give yourself a full two weeks of recuperation. No hard work, no heavy lifting. Get whomever you have to to help you do your daily "have to's." You had a big surgery. Get rested and do your walking as you are able. When the weight starts falling off, you will be energized by your burning fat stores. At least I have been. I think I felt better during surgery recovery than i've felt in years, simply because I STOPPED gaining weight! Give your self a mo mo to recover dear!

exhaustion starts when you have kids and ends when they move out :)

Took me at least 2 months before I stopped taking naps, but I'm older although I was walking a couple miles a day before surgery and going to the gym. I think it took me longer than normal to get my energy back. My daughter was back to normal in less than 2 weeks after her VSG surgery.

If I have learned anything from this forum- its that everyone has their own VSG journey and you cant judge yourself by someone elses.

Bottom line is your "get up and go" will return when it returns! :)

Make sure you keep your Dr/NUT in the loop about your diet and how you are feeling and they can make educated adjustments. I know its soooooo difficult those first few weeks to sip, sip, sip but do your best to try and hit your goals.

Congrats you are on the other side!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
