How Much Liquids A Day Should I Be Getting In? 6 Days Post Op

Recommended Posts

Today I felt dizzy after I took a shower, so sat down so I didn't faint. Dr's coordinator said to make sure I am getting my liquids in & especially drinking gatorade.

I have had almost 2 cups of gatorade today. Wondered how many cups or ounces I should be getting in each day right now?

I really don't want to get dehydrated as the thought of having another IV in me is freaking me out. So want to make sure I am getting all my fluids in at home!

You should be aiming for a minimum of 64oz per day (eight 8oz glasses or cups). However, some people struggle to get above 48oz their first week. I had a few dizzy spells and it turned out to be low potassium due to the liquid diet. The gatorade will give you some, but not all of what you need. My doctor prescribed me some pills I dissolved in Water and they really helped. At three weeks out, my doctor told me to aim for 80oz of fluids per day.

Do you have a good doctor and/or nutritionist to work with here in the states, to do labs and monitor your health?

I was never told to drink gatorade. I was told Water was more important than anything else. Gatorade has a lot of sodium. Unless you lost A LOT of blood your electrolytes should not be imbalanced.

Thanks guys. I guess I am not getting enough liquids in then. I was nowhere near 64oz & probably not close to 48oz either yesterday. So will up my fluids & try to drink more. Boy, feels like I am stretching out my little tummy drinking so much liquids though!

Here in the States I will be seeing my PCP for follow up bloodwork & go to a support group locally that has a nutritionist, so can ask questions there. But that is only once a month.

LadyIvy, that is funny. I have gatorade on my list of acceptable fluids & my post-op instructions say to get at least 1 1/2 cups of gatorade a day in.

Glad to hear you have some support. Gatorade was not on my acceptable Fluid list either, but that's because my doctor is super diligent on the low-carb thing. You'll see lots of variation of what each doctor finds acceptable. Some docs don't care about carbs, but mine wanted me to be less than 20-30g for the first month -- still not above 40g daily now. The majority of my liquid was Water, tea, soy milk, or broth those first few weeks.

I too was told 64oz. this is almost impossible at first but get as close as possible it does include all fluids broth, Jello, tea, popcicles etc. very important when I got dehydrated I passed out then went to hosp. in ambulance! Don't worry about stretching stomach I was told when on fluids stomach is like a funnel it runs through very quickly later as food is thicker it takes longer to go through. Remember our Montra always be sipping! Good Luck!

Get as much Fluid as possible. Anyway you can- Jello, Protein drinks, ice chips, poweraide zero, etc

I personally try to get 88oz/day because its hot here in Cali and because I feel better with more liquid (and I can fool the head hunger).

My secret to getting all that liquid is a (gasp!) straw! I know some Dr's dont like their patients using a straw because of the added air you can intake (plus air causes some seriously loud gurgling in my tummy)- but a bit of air beats an IV anyday in my book!

I am just a few days post op & my goal is 40 & 48. 40 oz of Protein & 48 oz of liquid. I was sent home with the Isopure drinks (40 oz) of protein.

Sharon are your support meetings only for your dr's patients? (I live in Hamilton)

Also, what kind of Gatorade? I got G2 like my NUT said, but it has 16g of sugar in it!!!

No, the support meetings are open to anyone that has had sleeve, bypass or band. I actually had my surgery in Mexico, but attend the meetings.

If you wanted to come you are welcome, just probably a drive for you! Next one is on Wed May 23rd at 7pm. If you are interested then let me know (you can send me a PM) & I will give you the address.

I have been drinking G2 also. My Dr just told me Gatorade, did not tell me a specific kind though. Today by accident I picked up some regular Gatorade, so will use those 2 bottles up (just small bottles) then back to G2 again.

I didn't want that much sugar either, as they are carbs!

Just remember that in the clear liquid stage everything counts toward your total ounces. Although it's hard to say how much is in a SF popsicle, it still counts. It takes me all day now instead of less than an hour like before surgery, but I'm not having any problems getting in at least 64 oz of liquid & most days I've gotten a lot more than that overall.

I thought I was going to pass out last night. Had some gatorade G2 today and feel much better. It was not on my allowable list but it was obvious that was what I needed. I will keep it incorporated in my daily liquids for now.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
