I'm Craving Potato! :-(

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I haven't had any cravings (except for watermelons) since my surgery. I love chocolate and was worried that I would give in to temptation. But after surgery, I cant stand sweets - especially chocolates.

But from last night, I've got this weird craving for potatoes. Not even for fries, I would settle for any version. I'm 4 months post-op and havent had even a bite of potato till now. Do you guys eat them? If not regularly, atleast once a while? If so what is your fav low-fat recipe with potatoes?

Thanks!

I have not had the surgery yet, but was just looking at my diet restrictions post op and it shows that I can add potatoes back in around 8 weeks out. I would think a baked potato with butter spray would be your most healthy option.

Go get a baby blue or red potato - the whole thing is about 1-2 oz...bake and enjoy! Consider some evoo/sea salt or a small bit of a very strong, sharp, finely grated cheese...

I had a friend "blend" the contents of a littel blue with a turnip and some red wine and bake it back in the skin. She loved it.

I eat mash potatoes, they where allowed in my mushy stage. Make your own and use light versions of the ingredients.

I ate baked potatoes (the insides only) at about 4 weeks out with butter spray and lite sour cream...unfortunately potatoes don't sit too well with me, so I tend to avoid them now.

When I crave something- I eat it.

Not stuff-my-face-oh-my-god-I-ate-all-of-that-hide-the-wrappers eat.... But a small portion. I find if I give into the craving (in a reasonable way) I don't feel deprived or fixated and a small amount will fix the urge.

If you are far enough out- have your potato.... Just add in some extra cardio and resistance training to make good use of the carbs.

Enjoy the control your sleeve has given you! :)

I love this post.

Pre-Sleeve I used to stuff my face with food I only sort of likes. If it was there, I'd eat it. Now I eat things that I really like or crave. If I'm ambivalent about a particular food then I pass it by.

Just get all your Protein in and enjoy a bit of potato. Eat the skin - it's good for you.

Why would you deprive yourself of something you enjoy and in correct size/portion is perfectly fine to eat?? As a vegetarian, I would be lost without potatoe- Obviously I eat them in a minimal way but I certainly don't deprive myself. I lived off of potatoe Soup during my mushy phase and mashed potatoes too. Now I prefer a baked potatoe with greek yogurt and thats it. GO for it!!

Thank you for the replies, guys!!

I was so scared to eat potatoes because of the carbs. But you are right - eating a small portion will not be a problem. I'm usually good at avoiding temptation. This is the first time I even voiced out a craving. I mean, potato is not even my 'most fav' food. So this is really driving me crazy LOL

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
