I'm suppose to have the sleeve in June in Mexico. I'm scared to go there for one. Scared about all the stories about what the food does to them. Scared about getting it done and not losing any weight..don't really have anyone to talk to about my feeling and thoughts.

I just came back from Tijuana with dr. Ponce de leon. I loved my experience and am doing awesomely well! Make sure you are 100% comfortable with your surgeon and his staff, do your research, don't just go with someone because it's cheap or close by. There are wonderful surgeons in Mexico! Most are much more experienced than here in the USA.

If your scared you need to research it more, I also will be going to mexico the end of June and I feel confident with my dr "Dr. Aceves" and if I was scared or didn't have the good vibes from him or going then I would keep looking. I am nervous about surgery because anyone either here in the states or Mexico could have complication. I choose to go to Mexico because I have a very high deductible $5,000 plus the $2,500 wellness dr aftercare and in Mexico for $8750 for hospital stay and all and my PCP had no problem doing check ups. I think with the prices dr's in the U.S. charge more and more people are shopping around not just for weight loss but everything. Sorry so long :)

I just got back from seeing Dr. Alvarez in Piedras Negras. My surgery was on May 15th. It was a wonderful trip. Everything was flawless in regards to transport, the way I was received, the surgery, recovery and discharge. I highly recommend Dr. Alvarez. He is the best in my opinion. He holds annual reunions to keep in touch with all his patients, which I plan on going next year for my one year surgery-versary.

Why are you planning on going to Mexico for surgery if you're scared to go there? I know it's cheaper, but cheap can't buy peace of mind. I know plenty of people here have gone to Mexico and done fine. For me, it was important to feel good about my surgery and aftercare even if it meant paying more for surgery, which led me to the decision to have a local surgeon. In my opinion, you need to be comfortable with what you decide. If you are planning on going to Mexico, you should find some way to be okay and not scared with going there. Being scared will just add to your anxiety over having surgery in the first place. There are plenty of threads here about surgery in Mexico & maybe you can find some support system here to help you understand more what to expect for surgery and for aftercare. Good luck with your decision and upcoming surgery! :-)

I was very unsure about going to Mexico but I have done some pretty extensive research and have decided to go there and feel 100% completely confident about the decision. I sort of look like it this way, if I had a rare illness and there was an experimental treatment that could help me AND I had to go to another country to get it, I would. I work in the healthcare industry. Our healthcare in the US is very flawed. Insurance companies tell the providers what they can and cannot do. People in this country cannot get the care they need because they are uninsured or underinsured. The hoops they make you jump through to have WLS is absurd. it is the way it is because they don't want to pay for anything and especially something like this. so, do some research and if you still feel apprehensive then don't go and put your mind at ease. the stressofmworrying about it and not being comfortable with it will not be good for your body if you do go with reservations. Good Luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
