hello~

Part of my pre-op requirement is to take an adult dose of a laxative 3 days before surgery and then nothing but Clear liquids. I bought milk of magnesia intending to use it. Knowing nothing about laxatives, I am wondering if it will be strong enough or if I should buy something different. I dont want anything too harsh, but I still need the "effect". Is MOM adequate or would your recommend something else?

Corinna

Your doctor should have told you what s/he wanted you to use. I believe the gold standard is magnesium citrate (comes in a green bottle, looks like sprite, tastes like crap) and it definitely cleans you out thoroughly. You'll need the day off tomorrow if you drink it tonight. I'd check with my doctor before I took the laxative and make sure you're taking the right one.

Magnesium Citrate is what my doctor had me drink at 10 a.m. Walgreens has a Walgreens brand. It definitely sucks, but I haven't been bound to the toilet, as I was on Clear Liquids the last two weeks with a dinner.< /p>

They just told me to take an adult dose of an OTC laxative of my choice. I am assuming that there is a difference between stool softeners and laxatives. I dont think I need to take anything as harsh as magnesium citrate since I will be on clears for 3 days after the dose of laxative. I wont be taking it until next sunday, but bought the MOM today. I think it will be sufficient. I just read on another board that others have used MOM as well. Thanks so much for your replies!!

Good, Corinna! It's tough to know if they doctor gave specific instructions or not. It seems that a lot of docs aren't as thorough as my surgeon was with me. Of course, mine may have been a special case because I asked about three quadrillion questions, even if I thought they were stupid. :)

I used Miralax before my colonoscopy mixed with gatorade; went fairly quickly and no cramping.

hmmm, not this requirement yet from my surgeon unless they give me that news tomorrow at my 1 week pre-op appointment. If so, I'll be sure to ask what kind. Maybe it makes a difference what type of pre-op diet you have? I had to do 2 weeks of Protein Drinks and clear liquids so no food for the last week and another 6 days to go, with clear liquids only day 7.

Miralax works quickly gently and no taste just add it to anything you want.

Miralax and MOM should be fine. You will get more cramping with MOM as it induced intenstines to start churning. Miralax works by flooding the bowels with Fluid. It is an osmotic laxative. A stool softener is not the same thing.

Lol. Tastes like crap is an understatement. I had to take Fleet once - I'm a strong chick and can do most anything I put my mind to. I was crying trying to get that stuff down! I ended up having my husband go back to the pharmacy and get the supositories. Playing alien butt probe was far prefferable than trying to drink that stuff! I do have my limits as to what I will eat/drink! Lol

LOL, Tibbie! Alien butt probe indeed! Yeah, that stuff is nasty! I worked in a prison while in college and the high carb diet fed to the inmates caused them to have problems. Mag Citrate is what I ordered for them (Pharmacy Tech) and they had to drink it standing in front of me because it came in glass bottles that I had to confiscate. More than one solved their Constipation issue after the first sip, or decided they would rather be constipated than drink that crap.

Lol Lissa! Amazing how they can quickly get better! Hahaha. Yeah - gotta say - I just wouldn't wish that stuff on my worst enemy.....well.....then again....there is this one person that worked for me that I REALLY didn't like........yeah.......giving her that might have made me giggle a bit!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
