What's The Story With Gerd?

Recommended Posts

I've been reading anything I can find about the sleeve and have seen some concerns about GERD, possibly getting worse after a few years. I asked my prospective surgeon about it and he suggested that it probably is a result of overeating. Any thoughts or experiences?

My physician seems concerned about this as well. He is sending me for manometry and 24hr PH testing. I guess to be sure the GERD isnt so bad that I will suffer worse after surgery?? Not really sure. Personally, I feel if I don't have surgery I will be on prilosec the rest of my life anyway cuz Im fat. So who cares if I still have to take it postop?? I use an OTC version that controls it completely right now.

In my case GERD not a problem currently. I've had it happen a few times, but certainly no more than a handful of times in my lifetime. If I have had it there was either a very large meal or some incredible stress levels involved.

I really don't have a problem with it now. It's just that I've heard that some people develop it after a sleeve and I'm curious about the experiences of others. At this point in time I basically have a cast-Iron stomach that will absorb the spiciest foods I throw at it. Last night I had Kung Pao chicken with no worries.

Well in that case u r lucky and should have no problem post op

Music to my ears. I can live without a lot of carbs, been there, done that, but I hope that I'll always be able to add some liquid fire to my diet in the form of salsas, etc.

DesertRat,

I was sleeved on May 7th by Dr. Monash (a superb surgeon in my opinion) in tucson. He also repaired a hitial hernia. The next day I started feeling like i had stomach acid creeping up all the way up into the back of my mouth. Preop, I had occasional heartburn, acid reflux, but this was much more severe. Doc suggested I start taking Prilosec. Since then, it has Improved greatly. I wouldnt be surprised if I have to take Prilosec or an equivalent permanently. Hope that helps and good luck on your journey!

Thanks for the reply. I'm fortunate not to have much in the way of indigestion so far but I realize that there are no ironclad guaranties.

Best wishes to you on your recovery and progress.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
