As my June 20th surgery date approaches, I find myself wondering how many people view their surgery as unsuccessful. How many people regret the decision? How many people would have done it differently if they had to do it again? If you have a story like that to share, will you please? Thanks in advance.

Melissa

I can think of things I would have done differently in the process, and things I wish had went differently - but my only regret is I did not do it sooner.

Great question... hindsight has 20-20 vision!

I don't consider myself as unsuccessful even though I am not at my 'goal' weight... I am at my first goal size though...lol

i think if I could change anything I would of added Protein shakes in the first instance; when I was in the liquid stage. i started exercising 4-6 weeks post op, gentle stuff at first then I got stronger and my training got harder and harder... I often wonder if I should have stayed at the gentlier side of exercise!

Apart from that small aspect, I am, overall chuffed to bits!!

Hi! I had the surgery on March 27th. I would have done the exact same thing over again! For me, there have been small bumps in the road but I would do it again. The weight loss hasn't been instant but I appreciate it more that way. It has allowed me to learn and "reprogram" my brain to better choices. You have to be prepared to do the work and I'm so glad to see that you are on the message boards getting other people's opinions, its important to know as much as you can before your surgery. Use this board as a resource for many different things. My best advice - stay in the know, keep learning and don't set unrealistic expectations. Like anything else, this takes time and will require you to relearn about yourself, but its all worth it.. Good luck and keep your head up!

My surgery was 3/12/12. I had no complications. I am at 9 weeks out now, and have only lost 19 lbs. I still do not regret having the surgery, and can't think of anything that should have been done differently. I just hope that my weight loss will pick up again, I am following all of my doctor's guidelines. I was self pay, so kind of expensive to be still 63 lbs away from my goal!

June 20th will be here before you know it. I have NO regrets. I was sleeved March 27. I'm down, something like 33-ish pounds. People are really starting to notice and that is nice. If I had this to do over again.....I'd tell a few less people. I didn't realize how judgmental some of them would be. I eat only 600-800-ish calories per day and THAT is the reason I'm losing weight. The surgery helps me because I'm not hungry and my stomach fills up quickly. But I don't like that for some people the surgery seems to, now, define me.

I like your post. Educate yourself. Be honest with yourself as to why you want this surgery and you'll do great!

At what point did you all start losing after the surgery?

I lost pounds right away. Surgery 4/11/12 and as of 4/7/12 I have lost 27 lbs. But my advice to you is all of us are different and what may happen to one may not happen to others. My start was a rocky on The surgery went well but my recovery took a left turn. I was a very high risk person and was worried about the problems that may happen. June will be here sooner than you know it start working on changing things in your life. Stp eating and drinking. Start chewing your food at least 30 times before swollowing. You will have to reprogram yourself to eat again after your surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
