Ok..going Back To The Straw Issue..

Recommended Posts

Once I tried the straw ..I am getting way less air than when I sipped with a regular cup or bottle. This in turn has made for less pain for me. Thanks to all of you who advised me to try it. It has made a huge difference!

It's so funny - my surgeon tells patients "no straws"... but, I actually prefer them too! Maybe some people just have different stray techniques that causes them to swallow a lot of Water. I know I don't, and obviously you don't either!

Glad you found someething that works!

The straw makes it easier for me to get more fluids down in a shorter period of time. I have no discomfort. Maybe the no straw is slanted towards the RnY procedure. LOL

I use a straw too. I can drink more with it and I dont get a lot of air either. I only started using the straw after a few months out. Now i use them all the time.

I just switched to using a straw last monday...world of difference! Went from barely able to get down 20oz of fluids a day to now hitting 60 easy. In fact, I'm working on a 32oz of unsweetened pineapple Papaya iced tea from Quik Trip right now....delicious!

Hi! My name is Deann and I'm a straw user! I love my unsweetened Decaf tropical ice tea and drinking with a straw causes me no discomfort whatsoever. I easily get all my fluids in since I finally started using the straw.

LOL at you Cat Lady!! I confess, I've been known to use a straw as well. I bought some 24 oz insulated cups for Water that come with hard straws in them. I try to drink at least 3 of those cups full a day and I've been doing well using them.

Ok, you've sold me. I'll try the straw; but don't tell my doctor! My nutritional nurse made a point of no straws, too much air getting sucked in. I'll try today & let you know how it went.

My doc said he has no preference. They left it up to me if I wanted to use a straw or not. I have used a straw and haven't had any issues with it.

The no straw rule is ridiculous. I get why they tell us that, but the "theory" just isn't how it happens. If they watched a swallow mechanism and could somehow dye the air to make it visible, or talked to an ENT, or read anything about pressures in the body, or even looked at things like diving principles....or whatever - I think that rule would change. I personally get WAY less air through a straw than through regular drinking.

The other part was the volume you drink - people tend to take bigger drinks wth straws (the fastfood industry studied this inside & out). I think the NUTs' fear being we would drink too much and "stretch our sleeves" or have to yak it back up. If I'm going to over-drink, I'm going to do it through a bottle where my tendency is "chug" rather than with a straw where I'm sort of forced into sipping (I don't use the high capacity fast food straws like McD's, those things are huge).

Hearting my straws over here...

I started the straw yesterday, (I was too chicken to start earlier) and it appears okay. I was so dizzy & didn't feel good yesterday I went to my family doctor. It appears that I am dehydrated. So...I started the straw. Still dizzy this morning, but betterr.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
