My first alcohol was a little over two months post-op. I tried a margarita (tequila). A few days later I also tried a mojito (rum). I had no trouble with either of them. BUT, there are alot of empty calories in those AND I can't really drink enough fast enough for it to have any effect. So, I've pretty much decided that I won't be drinking any more. I don't need the temptation to stretch my sleeve or the empty calories.

Good luck!!

I waited six months and started with a couple of ounces of port. I moved on to MaiTais after a few weeks. I drink slightly less sour drinks now. I drank margaritas and vodka/cranberry or vodka/grapefruit pre-op. Now I drink sweeter drinks. The acid hurts my tummy a bit now. Although last SaturdayI did manage to enjoy 5-6 tequilla shooters. It's the first time I've done that post-op. It set well, but I was hung over but good the next day!

My surgeon said I could drink whenever I wanted to post op, but to be VERY CAREFUL. Alcohol is absorbed by the stomach into the bloodstream and being sleeved means we can get drunk very quickly. I sipped a couple of wine spritzers at a party four weeks out and just one week out I drank two half-glasses of sav blanc with no ill effects. Your surgeon will recommend what he thinks is apt.

My surgeon says one year! I guess it's good that I don't drink. :)

I got told 4 months, not that it matters, because I live in a dry country, but looking forward to some Italian wine when we go on our summer vacation in July!!!

I don't know that it really matters, so long as you take into account that alcohol metabolizes as sugar and is wasted calories. I think most surgeons say to avoid it because you're trying to lose weight and drinking too much alcohol can inhibit your loss.

And yes, I do get drunk WAY faster than before. I mean, I don't even need to finish an entire drink! So be careful with that. And my tastes changed completely. I used to love beer and can't stand it now.

My surgeon just told me to be careful of the carbonation in beer and he was right. A can or bottle of beer is almost miserable to drink! Besides that, I've had zero issues with alcohol and it hasn't affected my weight loss any, so that's good too.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
