Peachygal7 5 Posted May 8, 2012 Hey Ya'll!!! I had my sleeve two weeks ago and I am wondering if anyone else is having an issue with a weird taste in their mouth. It is really bad when I wake up, but all throughout the day it just feels icky. I find myself brushing my teeth a lot. And before today I loved the Protein Shake I was on, but yesterday it started leaving an AWFUL aftertaste. Any suggestions??

Isabel'sGma 18 Posted May 8, 2012 Well, I had been having a really weird, nasty taste in my mouth, almost like the taste I have gotten in my mouth in the past right before I threw up. It was there constantly and almost unbearable. Yesterday when I went for my two week checkup, Dr put me in the hospitla for dehydration. I am not sure if the two are related, but I have a feeling they were because today I have it just a tiny bit, but it is much better.
AbacoRaveness 44 Posted May 8, 2012 The weird taste is probably ketosis, which is the process that your body uses to burn fat for energy so it's a good thing. The best way to manage it is to invest in a tongue scraper. There is a kit from a company called BreathRx that has a tongue scraper, mouthwash, and breath freshening spray that was my lifeline during the ketosis phase. 1 Peachygal7 reacted to this

AbacoRaveness 44 Posted May 8, 2012 Wow! Thanks so much! Where do you get that kit at? I got it from my dentist (Coast Dental), but I've since learned that you can get it at Walmart! 1 Peachygal7 reacted to this
Mews 37 Posted May 9, 2012 It's definitely ketosis. Mine faded after I started on mushies. I was so thankful 'cause that taste was nasty!
fluffylibra30 323 Posted May 9, 2012 If I stay at 30 carbs or under I get the fuzzy tongue and bad breath. I just add a few carbs. I don't want to have too many but hate that so I try to stay at 40-50.
Peachygal7 5 Posted May 9, 2012 Thanks for the replies ya'll!!! I'm sooo glad to know I'm not the only one with the funky mouth. LOL
ThinningMike 5 Posted May 9, 2012 I had that nasty taste and a coating on my tongue too. For me it appears to be a result of dehydration. Basically, your mouth was lacking the hydration necessary for the particles of what you are consuming to slide off easily. This results in a cumulative effect where you have old particles of Protein shake, yogurt, or whatever else you've been taking in sticking to your tongue. It tastes and smells horrible. Use the tongue scraper that has been suggested, also brush your tongue, and rinse with a good mouth wash. The most important thing though is to increase your Water intake. suzcomptime 17 Posted May 17, 2012 I haven't had surgery yet and I have it. I am sure my body is in ketosis with only doing the Protein Shakes and liquid. I used to use gum to help with fresh breath during the day but now we can't chew gum. I assume sugar free breath mints are OK before and after surgery?
