I will start from the beginning of my journey. When I started this journey to get the sleeve back in Novenber 2011 I weighed 227 lbs. I am 28 years old and 5'1". I have been working out by walking 2 miles a day. I got bored with walking the same route everyday. So I started doing my Wii Active 30 day challenge. I've been doing the Wii active challenge for about 2 weeks. Today I weighed in. It was my last visit for my 6 months. During the last 6 months I have lost 18 lbs. to me I thought I was doing very well. Even getting off the couch and exercising was great for me. So here is my frustration. They did my testing today and found that I have lost more muscle than fat. They say I need to build muscle, which I understand that. I just felt like I was doing good. The Wii Active is fun for me because I never know what the next workout will be. Can anyone help me with what I can do or am I just being sensitive?

Can you start doing weight training? Walking doesn't do as much for building muscle as lifting weights.

I haven't had the sleeve done yet so I assume I can. I asked the medical assistant what is more important weight training or walking, she really didn't answer me. So I just continued to do the walking and my wii active. Any suggestions?

A mix of both will be optimal - rotate what you do by day, or do a little of both each day. After surgery you'll find that if you aren't eating enough Protein and doing some strength training you'll lose muscle. Cardio (walking, running, etc.) is good for your heart and something you should do, but it my opinion (and you'll have others chime in with their opinions, too) it shouldn't be the focus of your exercise routine. It burns fat, yes. But so does a calorie deficit, which is what the sleeve is going to force you into. Combine the two without getting the nutritional needs met and you're going to lose muscle.

So once you're sleeved I'd shift the focus primarily to a protein-heavy diet. I'm not saying low-carb it, I'm saying eat 80-90+ grams of Protein a day after you're totally healed and can hit those goals. Then add in strength training to not only build your muscle but to be sure you aren't losing what you've got. Perhaps circuit training is what would make you happy?

I was going to suggest circuit training too. You'll get strength training plus the cardio you like. Once you have your sleeve you won't be able to do strength for 4-6 weeks depending on your surgeon so you'll be doing all walking then.

I was rotating walking and weight training every other day, but I felt I wasn't getting a good workout. I was doing my wii active which I think is kind of a circuit training, but from what I was told its not enough. Has anyone joined curves? Maybe that's what I'm looking for something like that. Is there any videos or games that are a good circuit training? I have the biggest loser on Xbox but it was to hard for me. I personally thought weight training was more important than walking but my medical asst I was seeing didn't agree. Right now I average about 50 grams protein a day. I'm going to try the premade shakes from costco. What workout do u do? How long do u do it?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
