Nagging Cough 3 1/2 Weeks Out.

Recommended Posts

I'm almost 4 weeks out and I notice that sometimes but not always, I get a slight cough after eating. When it does happen I will cough sporadically for several hours before it finally subsides. It almost feels like my full stomcah is triggering a cough reflex. I'm not sick, have no fever, am keeping all foods down with zero vomitting ever. Any ideas what this could be?

Maybe that's your full trigger. When im full, I hiccup for awhile.

That cough could be reflux. Try cutting back on the size of your meal, and see if that helps. If it does, you might want to eat smaller meals, more often.

I have a cough to and it hurts terribly when I do cough.

Did either of you get instructions to do some deep breathing and coughing the first couple of days after your surgery? My RN patient advocate for the program came to my hospital room and helped me hold a pillow over my tummy and do some major coughing so that I could get up the phlem (sp?) (sorry) that forms in your lungs during anesthesia. It hurt like a dog, but I was shocked at what came up! I also felt much better after that. She said that if you don't get that junk up, it can make you sick and you can get pneumonia. This is not true for all and I am not suggesting that you are sick or have a case of pneumonia, just curious if anyone else did this routine while in the hospital in addition to using the spirometer for deep breathing.

I think you are right. I also get this cough after eating too much.

I had to use a spirometer for 2 weeks post op, which aided the phlegm in coming up. I'm almost 2 months post op now, and still cough occasionally. It does tend to happen when I eat too fast or eat too much. It's annoying, but it's definitely helped me learn when to stop.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
