Are You A Chugger?

Recommended Posts

I am a Water chugger and have worried about controlling that once I am postop. I recently bought one like this only in pink:

http://www.camelbak.com/Sports-Recreation/Bottles/2012-Groove-Insulated-6L.aspx

It has a bite valve. The part you drink from is a pliable plastic. Think baby bottle nipple. Anyway, it come with a straw which I immediately removed. All you have to do is raise the bottle up like you would any water bottle without one. There is still some sucking but not like you would if it had a straw. I dont know how much water you'd get if you left the straw in but without it, it greatly reduces the amount of water you take in thus you don't chug. Perfect solution for me. You might wanna try one of these water bottles if you having trouble with chugging.

I used to be a HUGE Water chugger. It was no big deal for me to tip up a bottle and slam 16 ozs or more. The surgery has taken care of that for me. If I take too big of a drink, I feel it! Nothing really terrible, just enough discomfort to remind me to slow down.

I was the same way.. Now it will take me all day to drink the $1 tea (unsweet of course) from McDonalds.. Lol. Even the small Water bottles are hard for me to finush at once...

I still chug now, no pain at all from it. At first I didn't even try. I was terrified, but then one day I accidentally did and I didn't feel any discomfort. So I chug. Not as much as I used to, it is now more like one very large sip at a time instead of four or five medium sized ones.

I can chug. sort of. I can do about 4 or 5 swallows in one go. Sometimes it hurts, like it gets stuck. But I just stop drinking, and it passes.

I don't chug, on purpose. My dr. scared me pre op with a story of someone who caused a leak due to chugging. Then again, I got a leak anyways, so what do I know. :(

Your chugging habits will be either be extremely or moderately adjusted by the sleeve, plus the pain if any will make you change habits

I sort of chug now. I used to be able to down 20oz in a minute. Now I can down about 4-6oz pretty quickly if necessary. I do try to sip more than anything else but old habits are hard to break. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
