I bet some dietitians would do a telephone consult. But you can also follow one of the many published guidelines out there. I made a list of all of the ones I could find from well respected hospitals and research facilities. http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/topic/85182-list-of-vsg-post-op-diets-from-surgeons/

Yes I saw a new dietitian today, but I hope I won't need to see her often once I get into the groove. If I hit a big stall or when I want to go into maintenance. But I do think there is a lot of info out there for people who don't have ready access to a dietitian.

The only feedback I have on what you posted you eat is that it seems like pretty low calories and low Protein too especially since you hardly get any Protein before noon. But then again it is working for you. I know we are supposed to have protein to preserve our muscle mass which helps our metabolism. How many calories and protein do you get in a day? I saw you added me on MFP but I think you have your food diary private.

So I get between 500-600 calories per day. I am supposed to have 48g protein per day according to MFP and today I got 40g.

My dietician from weightloss solutions was doing phone contact until about three months ago and I could give her a call. I guess since I am losing weight and feeling good I didn't really think it was too much of an issue :) I eat healthier than I ever have in my entire life and love how I feel from eating now- energised and good rather than stretched, bloated and on a sugar high.

I have consulted and researched a lot about my diet and what I eat comes mostly from trial and error though and what kind of feels good. I would NEVER suggest that what I am doing is 100 % right or the best way- it's just an honest account of what I am doing :)

Yeah I didn't mean to be critical at all. I have a lot to learn still and you are doing awesome. I hope I didn't step in it. It wasn't my intention. I just have been doing so much research and I think I'm a bit obsessed!

No not at all- I suppose I just didn't want to present myself as if I thought what I do is the "best" way to go about the sleeve. What I have learned is that the sleeve dictates you listen to your body far more closely as opposed to the clutter in my head that even now, urges me to chow down on that choccy bar or bowl of Pasta.

Thanks for posting this link Misty. I have just had a read of one of them and found it really helpful. It's good to see all of the information in one place (even though I knew most of it) is there any way to "bookmark" it so I can find it easier next time I want to read?

Misty this list is a great reference list and reminder of what we should be doing. Thanks for forwarding the link.

Hey guys,

I'm back from some work in and about Cairns. Just read through the last few pages. Everyone is doing so great :)

Sorry I missed today's lunch. I will get to another soon!

Brendan, you will know when you're ready. I agree with your dietician, I knew I was ready to have a VSG - I had lost ALL optimism for losing weight traditionally. If you believe you can achieve the weightloss you're after, I'm sure you will.

How long since you had a healthy BMI, Deano? You must look and feel fantastic!

How long since you had a healthy BMI, Deano? You must look and feel fantastic!

Not in my adult life Misty!

It's hard not to mark yourself against everyone around you (work, gym yadda yadda) I feel like I'm already blessed with a BMI of 27ish. I already feel and look healthier, stronger, faster than most people I meet / see / know. I dunno how I feel about comparing myself like that, but I can't help it. I am quite competitive!

So because of that, I'm expecting that if I get to a BMI of 25 it might be a bit of an anticlimax? But I'm enjoying the journey :)

Dean I noticed that you use a ticker each for your weight and BMI, but my weight one has my BMI? Not sure why it is different.

I lost 1.9 kilos! I am so happy. I feel like I will do even better now that I have a new plan.

I did email Di the dietitian (lol) because in practice, I am finding it VERY hard to tailor my meals to her numbers. If I understand it right, she wants me to have at least 8 grams of Protein a meal, no more than 5 grams of fat, and no more than 9 grams of carbs. THAT IS HARD. Today I have been concentrating on lower fat but it has meant that I have higher carbs. I also figured out that if I follow her plan to the T I will only get 684 calories a day, because Protein and carbs each have 4 calories a gram and fat has 9 calories a gram. So I wrote her a really nerdy email. I should paste it here so you guys can laugh at me for being so OCD.

Hi Di,

I am having some trouble putting your suggestions about fat and carbs into practice already. Just to make sure I have it right, here is what I think you wanted me to do:

* No more than 5 grams of fat in a meal x 6 meals a day = 30 grams fat max per day

* No more than 50 grams of carbs in a day / 6 meals a day = ~9 grams of carbs in a meal

* Between 50 and 60 grams of protein in a day / 6 meals a day = ~8 grams of protein in a meal

So this means that each meal (on average) would have 5 grams of fat, 9 grams of carbs, and 8 grams of protein. I believe that protein and carbs each have 4 calories per gram, and fat has 9 calories per gram. So my daily calories would work out to:

5 x 9 = 45 calories from fat

9 x 4 = 36 calories from carbs

8 x 4 = 32 calories from protein

=============

114 calories per meal

x 6

====

684

Now, 684 is quite a bit less than 800, which is the calories you told me I should aim for.

Also, it is really really hard to have BOTH less than 5 grams of fat AND less than 9 grams of carbs in a meal! Today I have managed to have less than 6 grams of fat for each Breakfast and morning tea, and 17 grams of carbs between the two, but I've already got 87 grams of carbs! Argh. I realize now that I was replacing carbs with fats in order to keep the carbs low and protein high.

So I am hoping that you can help me or that I missed something. I'm sorry if I am over-thinking this. This is just how I work!

Misty, let us know what Di replies back, but I do think you may be over thinking it ...just a tad!!! Are you sure she said 'no more' of some of these quantities as she told me 'at least'!

Yes I was over thinking it!

Hi Misty,

ok a little too precise.

* Protein is priority aim for 50g /day spread through the day

* Limit fat loading in a meal e.g. one egg not two plus cheese or avocado

You may not need 6 small meals - no less than four but go on both hunger and time span between meals so they are spread relatively evenly through a day - no need to eat at 9.30pm if you are up and not hungry .

I have attached a meal plan guide you may find useful

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
