Hi Newbies and welcome to this great thread. I was sleeved in Brisbane on 14 August so 5 weeks and I am down 17 kilos since beginning of two week prep which is half way towards my goal. Been back on normal food for past 2 weeks. Still getting used to how little I can eat, however I can eat all my favourite healthy foods. Saw my surgeon today for follow up and he is very happy with my progress. He said from now on to expect to lose 3-4 kilos a month.

If you have any questions, just ask as one or more of us usually have the answers ....... gained from experience.

Got my date for October 29!!!! First test getting through 2 weeks of opti' date=' u guys all make it seem so easy. Its been an awesome process going sooooo quick ( I like that ) and now it's real with a locked in date ;)

Scotty[/quote']

Congratulations Scotty. Any tips on pre op just ask. In hindsight it was probably the easiest part of the process for me. Puree phase (weeks 2 & 3) was the pits!!

Bought 2 new tops yesterday and they are MEDIUMS. Haven't been this size in at least 10 years. Half way to goal and so looking forward to getting under 90kg hopefully within the next week as sitting at just over at the moment. Love my sleeve!

Omg Kelli I have a billion questions!

How was your post op recovery?

What was it like swallowing food/liquids the first time after surgery?

Was there a lot of post op pain?

What's meds were you given afterwards?

Would you say it was really hard the first couple of weeks or was it just a big change?

Ok that's it for now! I will think of some more later lol!!

Susie and Nessa

I think having a down period at that time is totally normal also I think your intake is pretty normal. I was told 1/3 of a cup of food and it should take 20-30 mins to eat that. My dietician said if you feel full then leave it for a while and come back to it. I too lacked a bit of energy and felt quite unwell but I figured out that I wasn't eatin often enough. My surgeon told me not to get in the habit of snacking but because you can't get much in' date=' I think you so need to eat morning and afternoon tea - at least initially until you can get more in over time. Now 9 weeks out it is slowly getting easier to eat a bit more so I think it just takes time to get used to the new way of eating and for your system to get used to it .

Welcome to all the new people - there seems to have been a rush on this thread latley! I too am happy that i went straight to the sleeve. I intially went to have a consultation about a band but when my surgeon explained the sleeve it just seemed to be the low maintence option (although it did sound a bit drastic). Anyway, really pleased that i had the sleeve.

I have found a stange thing and wondering if anyone else has noticed the same thing. I find liquids easier to swallow if I hold the liquid in my mouth and move it around a bit (like chewing food) before swallowing. I don't know why this would be the case but maybe it actually sends a message to my asophagus and stomach that something is coming down!! Am I sounding completely nuts???

So time for a progress report - started this journey at 102 kg, lost about 3 kg before seeing the surgeon so weighed in at 99 kg, lost about 8-9 kg on pre-op diet and I got on the scales today and I weighed in at 77.4 - I am wrapped. I also fitted into size 14 Target jeans today so that is so exciting. I can't remember when I was last a 14 - it would be about 20 years ago!

On the down side, my nails are breaking and I am dreading the 3 month hair loss that everyone talks about. I am taking my calcium citrate and silica with Biotin but I think it only helps and doesn't prevent. I will keep you all posted on how that stage goes![/quote']

Sueoco.... I was over at my mums place today and she offered to wash my work clothes. I didn't have a change of clothes and she reminded me that I still had clothes there from when I lived at home (highschool). I found a pair of size 14 target jeans that still had the ticket on them. I had never worn them. Tried them and they fit like a glove!!!

My stats mirror yours so much. Heaviest weight was 104kg, saw surgeon at 96kg, at surgery weighed 90kg and now, nearly 6 weeks post op weigh 74.9kg. If I only lose another 10kg, I will be in the healthy weight range. I want to lose 15 though.

I noticed something today, and you'll probably be the same as we are at very similar weights. Even if I stick my tummy all the way out, I can still see my ribs. Lol. Weird, I know. Just something that I haven't seen for a very long time.

Hope everybody else is well, and congrats Scotty. The time will fly, we're saving you a spot on the losers bench.

Hi Mimz

Happy to share my personal experience, however it varies between different people.

Answers:

Post op recovery was fine. In hospital forq 3 nights. Had a nasal drain (yuk, but not that common), abdominal drain and drip whilst in hospital, but I was back at my desk working from home the day after I was released. No gas pain, but stomach was sore for a few days. Eased by day 5 and more discomfort than real pain.

Swallowed liquids only for first week, (no problem), puree for two weeks which I found difficult. Not that the food tasted bad (except for gourmet baby food YUK), but I hated the consistancy. I also travelled during this phase and it was a challenge to find suitable food options. Moved onto soft food for week 4, then have been on normal food for the past week. Swallowing at all phases is easy....it's the feeling of it hitting your new sleeve that feels odd and in some cases painful, especially when it's still swollen for the first 28 days post op. Try and avoid the pain by only eating very small 1/4 - 1/2 cup size meals iniallty and the buggest lesson I am learning is to stop eating when I feel satisfied. If I take one more spoonful from that point it feels uncomfortable. The other great piece of advice was given to me by my dietician and that is to try and have a glass of Water 10-15 monutes before each meal. As you can't drink while eating for half an hour afterwards this stops you feeling thirsty and helsp you get the daily Water quota in.

Only pain post op was discomfort of new sleeve for first week which eased each day. No pain whatsoever from 5 small incisions.

Had a range of meds via injection plus panadol whilst in hospital, then nothing after discharge. Didn't need it.

Not really hard for the first few weeks, but definitely lots of changes to get used to. Every day I am having to learn how to eat all over again.

Hope that helps a little. I have had a good run, but from what I've read on his forum, most people have had similar experiences with the sleeve, except for poor Lila who was the unlucky one who had comolications. Happy to answer pter questions if I can.

Thanks Kelli!

I understand that everyone's recovery is different I myself have had 4 surgeries under my belt lol! The worst being my first caeserian. Now that was ouch, but then again they are cutting layers of you open!!

I know poor Lila has had complications and my heart goes out to her :( I only hope it does not happen to anyone else, but I am fully aware of the risks.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I am 108-9kg at the moment my goal being under 70kg. Ultimate being 60kg, I've always been able to lose weight but not keep it off long-term. After having kids not at all! Always so damn hungry and I can eat A LOT!

Hi Mimz, our starting and goal weights are almost identical. My dietician recommends my goal as 70kg but I would like to be in the 60's.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
