1 week post op

Recommended Posts

My surgery was last Friday in Hurst with Dr. Marsden and everything went great except I did get the dreaded shoulder pain. But I am a week out now and my abdomen is feeling much better and my stomach doesnt feel so swollen. I am back to almost normal even my shoulder is just sore not that stabbing pain like a few days ago.

I HAVE LOST 13 LBS!!!! Wow, I am so proud!!! But it is so funny how our brains work, this morning when I got up I didnt lose any weight and I was disappointed. Isnt that silly. I have lost 13 lbs in less than a week and I was bummed this morning. I am going to have to change so much about my thinking.

Anyway, THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT! I have posted some on this board and have always received great feedback but more than that just being able to come here and read and read and read about everyone elses journey has meant the world to me!!!

Love, Teresa

Hi Teresa - I'm glad your surgery went well. I'm not banded yet, but am seriously thinking about it. Can you tell me a little bit more about your experience right after the surgery? How long did you stay in the hospital? Were you bedridden at all? How much are you able to eat/drink in a sitting?

Thanks and good luck on your journey!

Kirsten

RatGirl,

I'm not Teresa, but I was banded on monday, so I might be able to give you some insight into how it went for me.

I don't remember anything more than a glimpse of the Operating Room before the surgery when i changed beds, until the time I opened my eyes in the recovery room. At this point they'd already removed the breathing tube. The next time I opened my eyes I was in my hospital room, and my family was there. My nose itched, and it took me like 30 seconds to get my hand to my nose to scratch. They gave me a dose of non-narcotic pain releiver, and then an hour later, I was able to get up and use the bathroom on my own. about 4 hours after surgery, I was sitting up on a couch they had in my room, and a couple hours later, I took a stroll around the hospital floor. I haven't had a dose of pain medicine since that initial non-narcotic right after surgery. I felt a little discomfort when changing positions, but everything else is great. I left the hospital the next morning after a floroscope to make sure my band was placed well and the port was in the proper position.

4 days out, I'm very comfortable. I slept on my stomach/side last night, and have no problem sitting/standing... As for food, i'm on a thin liquid diet, so i'm putting a lot of Water back, 64+ oz a day, but as far as broths and so forth, i'm limited to about 1/2 a cup per meal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
