Suggestions On Protein?

Recommended Posts

I am currently drinking A couple of the nectar Fruit Drinks and it is all I can do to get them down. They. Are to sweet! I think I would much rather have a great tasting yet a good quality shake that is. vanilla or chocolate not fruitty. I know I will have to have something that I enjoy because I will be drinking it from now on. I would appreciate hearing your likes and dislikes.

I liked the both the Light and Regular Muscle Milk (vanilla and choclate, not the other flavors) and it was pretty readily available wherever I happen to be.

I'm a fan of the Premier Protein shakes from Sam's Club. That said, NOTHING sweet tasted good to me early post-op.

I tried Unjury before my surgery and I liked the product. They have an unflavored one that works well with everything.

Post 04/30: The nectar drink is way too sweet and even the "unflavored" Protein has something that makes me gag when I drink it. So, I appreciate the suggestions as I was wondering the same thing.

nectar was way too sweet for me early on too... sweet anything tasted horrible then....now NO problem. I tried 4-ever-fit fruit flavors and they were good natural tasting fruit drinks, nice to not have milk sometimes. I ended up using them all the time. Mango is my fav. Not too sweet, pretty natural flavors, no ultra bright colors ...You can get them at Vitamin Shoppe or Vitamin world. While on vacation I used muscle milk light chocolate.. only 100 cals and 15 grams of pro in the small 4 pack size. Not tooo sweet.

Stay away from body fortress so early out because it has creatin in it and with you not getting in enough calories, it could actually hurt you.

It is good but the creatine that is in it can hurt you this early out in this surgery.

You want to wait until you are getting in enough calories. Creatin helps you bulk your muscles. You want a Protein that doesn't have creatin in it. You want the first ingredient to be whey protein but keep reading the ingredients. My doc told me to stay away from body fortress because it could make me sick right now.

I'm surprised because it was on the list for protein that my doctor recommended.

Your best bet would be to go to the food forum here and look at all the places you can get samples. It's hard to settle on one this early out. I would get a whole bunch of different samples for now.

I think Matrix is a really good product. It's low calorie and low carb.it's also made by Syntrex, the same co. that makes nectar, but it's not very sweet. You can get it at vitacost.com

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
