Am I Going Crazy? My Personality Changed.

Recommended Posts

I am seriously worried what is going on with me. I am the peacemaker among all who know me. I had my sleeve on 4/24 and I am experiencing serious mood swings. I get very anxious and angry, especially at night. My family is scared of me.....like, literally!

I thought it was the Oxy they prescribed for pain. I'd take a little at night to help me with the tenderness of tossing and turning. But I had nightmares so I didn't take it since two nights ago.

Also, I feel stupid. I can't process a thought and can't complete a sentence at times.

Anyone out there with same symptoms?!?!?

Thanks for listening. :-/

yep - I was a horrible witch and all I could do was rage at everyone and everything ! And 2.5 months post-op I still have my moments, but I'm controlling it much better (or so I think). I think it must be hormones plus this is a major change on many different planes: can't handle stress with food anymore, our bodies hurt and thinks we're starving it.

Just a thought, apologize when you're out of line, relax, and take it easy on yourself. You had a major surgery and are adjusting and recovering. Try to be kind to yourself and others. Come on this site to vent!

Oh and my daughter asked me why I was so mean to her dad today! I asked him if he thought I had been rude and he said "sometimes, but I understand." I then blasted my daughter for "butting in." I then took a moment, and apologized to them both and said I would try to work on this a little harder but please cut me some slack. We all love each other, as your family loves you. You'll get through this. Not to worry.

Yes...it is hormones. I am sure you have read this when you burn fat the fat releases hormones it has been storing like crazy and it make us a bit moody (or really moody) when you weight loss slows down and your body gets into a grove it stops. You will return to a "normal" you. Actually i think I am a bit more laid back now. But maybe you should ask my DH:)

This is very normal. I have done the same the thing. I learned to say I'm sorry a LOT. I don't know if this is the reason or not, but this is the fist time we have gone with out surgery, complex carbs, or processed foods. I am sure our bodies are going through withdraw. Also, we are trying to get used to dealing with a little stomach, watching what we eat and drink and we begin to realize that our lives will never be the same. I have been out for a month, and I still have my moments but it does get better. Just let your family know you don't know why you are like this and that you are sorry. Keep your head up, it will get better. :)

This string is exactly where I am at. My wife who is a saint even called be my fathers name today because of the way I was actting toward her. Now I love my father but he can be an ass verbally to my mother and I and my brother have spent most of our adult lives purposely not being that way. We are more reserved and make sure we dont let our mouths say something we can not take back. I was wondering what in the hell is up with me. Now my profession is Emergency Room PA and have been in medicine for 20 yrs and trained under a bariatric surgeon. I thought I should have seen this coming but lets face it, in my case I underestamated my relationship with food and I am morning not being able to eat what I want like a steak and bake potatoe like I once did. What I used to use as comfort, to Celebrate good times with, and generally I cooked in my home and loved to. So it is withdrawl at a strange level. However I do hope it gets better soon.

I think a lot of it is just because of starvation - which is really what your body is going through for the first few months.

Lots of health changes can cause this. Dehydration can really make one cranky, confused, forgetful. So does low caloric intake. Of course, hormones have to adjust to new things. Overall, as you lose weight, it puts incredible stress on your body's systems. So try to take Vitamins, drink tons of Water, exercise -- even just a little -- and eat.

Hang in there. Don't eat too little or your body will revolt. You'll find your rhythm!

Hormones, pain meds, and not having the numbing comfort of food can all be part of the problem. Your body is being flooded with extra estrogen right now as the fat cells release the stored estrogen into your bloodstream. You could also be having a reaction to the oxy. I can't believe they gave you the strongest pain med on the market for pain management after this surgery. I recommend you wean off of it and use some other weaker pain med instead if you still need pain management.

Are you exercising any? Exercise is a good way to work off all of these "extra" feelings you are having right now.

Good Luck.

Sharon

I'm only 2 days out of surgery and I don't have patience for BS. I think I'm possessed with gas pains, my commentary is different. I'd prefer to be left alone until this gas passes and the puree phase. I'm mentally exhausted and trying to get a little rest, but I can't because of this gas. I'm going to meditate and try to get my self aligned emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually. This is a lifelong commitment and coping skills need to be developed now...Attitude is everything.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
