ibthin 3 Posted May 3, 2012 I had Hiatal Hernia and Sleeve surgery done at the same time. Dr says that hernia was larger than expected. It seems each time I drink water/ Protein, whatever I have pains that radiate from the center of chest to to end of sternum and toward the left shoulder. Is this gas pains, hernia pains or what? Any suggestions?
Dooter 1,457 Posted May 3, 2012 Yes. It's all of it! LOL Some people take a while to get that surgical gas reabsorbed into the body, so it causes pain to the shoulder. The hernia, for me, was the slowest healing part of the whole deal. I was on pain meds for exactly two weeks as often as I was allowed to take it because of the hernia repair. I went through two bottles! Right at 2 weeks it stopped hurting. I'm three months out, and just a week ago I had one day where is just killed me all day. I called the surgeon and they said it was "scarring down" and the mesh is pulling and absorbing. So yes. That hernia will cause some issues- some people DO have trouble drinking and or eating at first because of it. It will get better though, I promise!
ThinningMike 5 Posted May 3, 2012 I had both done at the same time also. The hernia was a surprise to both my surgeon and I. I did have pains similar to what you're discribing. My pain was caused by gas (I'm pretty sure), and they pretty much stopped after a week. I didn't really experience any discomfort from the hernia till 2 weeks out when I quit taking my Lovenox injections.
ibthin 3 Posted May 3, 2012 Thanks to you both, Dr did tell me that it would be the longest part of the recovery. Terrible pulling tinges every once in a while. On top of that I think i am tolerating things well, just adjusting to the noises that my tummy is making continuously. I did see someones post about the gas x strips and will try that to see if it helps.
JaniRN 5 Posted May 3, 2012 I had a hiatal and umbilical hernia repair
Joni 94 Posted May 3, 2012 I was shocked when I woke from surgery and dr said I had had a very large hiatal hernia that he repaired. I had no idea. I was sleeved on 4/23 and I just stopped getting these incredible spasms that would actually start at the base of my throat and go down to about the end of my sternum. Hurt like hell. I still have difficulty swallowing sometimes with even little sips feeling "stuck" or a pill causing pain going down but it keeps getting better. As long as I know it will stop, and it will, I'm just dealing with it.
whataloser 25 Posted May 3, 2012 Had both done and no aftereffects that I'm aware of. At six months out, I still don't eat and drink together and I still do small portions (actually measured) so that I don't have more than one cup at a time. Have never had the slimes or nausea and consider myself very lucky.
