Walking Vs Bike Riding

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone chooses bike riding over walking?

Very keen on riding, but also don't want the gas pains that walking is supposed to help with - am supposed to be getting surgery in a little over a month, would love to get back on my bike and do my 20km to work in the morning & 20km back in the evening! Currently (pre weight loss) I drive 1/2 way and ride the other half everynow and then - seems like a waste though, I want to do it all dammit!

So does riding help with the gas pains?

Or do I really have to walk to get rid of them?

Ideally, i'd like to start this 2-3 weeks after surgery - too soon?

Thanks team! :)

My surgeon told me I could start biking again as soon as I had my drain removed. I do both walking and biking now. I go half the distance my body is used to, and then come home, drop my bike in the garage and then walk the opposite direction for half the remaining time and then back. I can't wait until I can do anything even near 20 km! I am hoping when I move it will be a bit easier though. Right now, I bike 3 days a week through TX hill country and although they aren't mountains, every few minutes you hit a pretty intense hill! I understand the need to want to do it all, but remember you are going to be tired for a while and will take some time to recover. Good luck!

Awesome thanks!

Ahhh hills! Lucky for me my 20km both ways is very flat :)

I'll try and ease into it! Sadly I'm a gen y so just want it all now! Hahaha

Post op you will be tired for a while bc your body is healing. This is common for the first 6 weeks so try not to push it. Take small increments at a time to see how it's going to affect you. Biking is very pleasurable as well as walking. You can do this and congrats on starting your journey. ;)

I was riding my bike very shortly after my surgery. The only thing I can caution about is to really take into account what a serious spill could do to your tummy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
