Hey there folks! Well it's been quite a while since I posted anything.

Tonight, I post a question--- I am out of my prilosec that my doctor prescribed me (my surgeon/his facilities are 2 hours away). I have an appointment with him on Monday, so I've been trying to hold off going to the store to buy the OTC kind, since it's so much more expensive.

Anyway...I've got really bad heartburn tonight. I suspect because I have been sick all day with the stomach flu and have been throwing up (first time since my surgery on Jan. 31, 2012). I'm miserable, and I can already tell that I'm not going to get to sleep.< /p>

Do any of you have home remedies for heartburn that I could give a shot?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

If you can handle milk - stir a teaspoon of bi carb into 1/4 cup of milk - stir it and drink - don't taste great - but we always used that when we were kids - and it works. I don't know if the milk is good for the stomach flu - but that is all I can think of right now.

Thanks Glenda! I tried that earlier, but it made my stomach turn a bit. It's a little humid today, and I have the weirdest stomach that's sensitive to just about everything (yes, even the weather). If it's humid, then my stomach is going to refuse any dairy. But I appreciate your reply! Good to keep in mind if I run into this again and don't have the stomach flu :)

I have used baking soda. The generic acid reducers are cheaper and sometimes help me, like Equate Acid Reducer, Walmart. I have used 1 Alka-Selzer tablet and drank it slowly which helped. Tums help sometimes.

I am more likely to get heartburn now when my stomach is empty. Just eating something stops it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
