Can't Tolerate My Protein Shakes - Help!

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am 1 week 1 day post-op. I did the whole first week on water/a few sf popsicles. On Monday, I was told to start my Protein Shakes again - 3 a day (one for each meal) for two weeks. I am also to still be drinking Water.< /p>

So, I have tried to get my Protein shakes in, but i just can't tolerate it - what I mean is that pre-surgery i used to kinda just chug the drinks to get them in (because i had to) and the taste really didn't bother me.

but now, i was told it should take me 1 hour to finish my 12 oz Protein shake...meaning i am sipping it very slow...meaning it spends more time in my mouth. i get half way through the shake, and i just can't take it. i feel like there is a disgusting film on my tongue, teeth, etc. there is even a film on my lips that i scrape off..

i have my next appointment with the dietician on the 16th of this month...a little over two weeks from when i started my protein shakes.

because of the protein shakes...and the lack of "real" food...i honestly am feeling depressed and generally sad.

i called my dietician's office to see if i could come in any earlier..and i stated that i was having problems and wanted to speak to the dietician. they said that because i am in a phase now (the Protein Shake phase) they could only move my appointment up to the 14th, and not any sooner.

i was hoping to find out if the dietician had any advice for me on the protein shakes - how to get them down, perhaps ways to get them to taste better or not leave a film....

so, i guess i'm asking if anyone has any ideas/suggestions, or have gone through this.

i feel like the next two weeks are going to be terrible, and more importantly i'm not going to be getting enough protein in.

please help me! advice, support, encouragement!

anythign will help!

thanks!

hello

i drink "pure protein" shakes

i have vanilla, chocolate, and Cookies and cream (all 120 cal's or less, adn 23 grams of protein)

i haven't tried other shakes yet...cuz i bought 8 boxes of the stuff...at 8 dollars a box....so i kinda don't want to waste my money.

does anyone reccommend a shake that tastes really really good?

I agree with the Protein Shakes. They are nasty. I bought Medifast cause the Protein is 15 grams per shake or Soup. It's not bad at all. I ordered on line and got them within a couple days.

Premier from costco or Sam's club. I love them.

These are the only ones I can drink, don't know if I love them, but they're not bad. I spent hundreds on ones I can't choke down for nothin'

The costco brand is good. I really like the vanilla flavor. I also ordered the "unjury" on line and the chocolate splendor taste just like choco milk or hot chocolate. Try to also mix some crystal light into the vanilla flavor. I am just 4 days away from surgery but have found the above two drinks the best.

Good luck - I will be in your shoes soon! B)

I have been using either Muscle Milk - 12 oz. chocolate (30 grams of protein) or Myoplex - 17 oz ( 42 grams of protein) - chocolate. I enjoy both as much as you can possibly enjoy a Protein Drink. They will become monotonous over time. I haven't tried them but Ive heard that the ones at costco are really good and are a good price.

I liked the muscle milk light vanilla creme I get it at costco it is not as heavy n thick. The choclate ones seem to give me indigestion. Hope you find one you like this phase will be over soon. Good luck!

You drink your protien like the Water slow sips it goes through the pouch almost as fast as water won't fill up if you do start to feel full stop and wait a few minutes.

I find I have to switch it up or I get sick of them. I have to use up the Isopure vanilla I have, so I mix that with skim milk and ice in the blender; it's not too bad. Then, I alternate with Syntrax, Fuzzy Navel mixed with Water and ice. It goes down more easily for me. I have ordered some more Syntrax citrusy ones because they don't feel as heavy to me and the taste is not bad. You should try those. You can get sample packs from their site. Good luck.

There are two distinct categories of shakes that people like:

1. Creamy chocolate and Vanilla style

2. Fruity shakes

I am firmly in the fruity camp. Get a 24 oz shaker bottle fill it with ice and Water, one scoop of a HIGH QUALITY fruit shake like nectar Brand and a matching crystal lite packet and shake. I have had one of those in various flavours every day for four years.

Peach fuzzy navel, or lemon or ice tea are faves. I can't handle chalky creamy shakes. Go to GNC or somewhere and buy clean good quality Protein and try what I suggested. I have no advice if you are category 1, because I can't take those flavours. I also never drink them without a CL boost.

Stick with it, your whole journey will be better if you can find a Protein you like.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
