Why Is The Pain Getting Worse?

Recommended Posts

Today I start my 3 weeks post op (Surg on 4/16) and this pain in my left side is gettng worse. I was fine until I vomited and it felt like something was tearing inside me. Initially thought it was pulled muscle but it is worse. To the ponit I cannot bend over or sleep on my sides. I'm not sure what is going on but have appt. with surgeon in the morning to check it out. Hope they didn't leave anything inside me they were not suppose to.

Let us know what your surgeon said.

Left side is the "access portal" for all the instrumentation, and in my case where they removed a big mass of scar tissue. It _hurt_. At first it wasn't that bad, but around week 3 it started to hurt worse than it hurt initially, and didn't really stop until about a week ago. It wouldn't hurt all the time, but I could barely bend, and sitting up was a bear. I had Lortab and it didn't help this particular pain. It's only occassionally noticeable now, but when it hurt it was a deep, burning, pinching feeling. I never vomited, but I did have to lift DD (about 40 lbs) in a psuedo emergency one night, long before I should've been lifting that much.

I got IV Fluid infusion to bring my liquids back up. Said the CATSCAN showed the sleeve and small intestine looking as it should be and they could see all the incisions and all looked ok. Said they think it could be inflamation of the muscle caused by my vomiting. Going to try non narcotic pain pill, eat yogurt foods, and let them know how I'm doing in a couple of days.

So it is the next day after the test and the contrast they made me drink has given me diarrhea since yesterday. My side still hurts, I feel nauseous, all my liquids taste terrible and I've having trouble keeping them down. Tried a cracker thinking it would help settle my stomach....wrong vomitted again. I've skipped my Vitamins because I know they will just add to the nausesa. Still trying to get some fluids in but not doing a good job of it. I've taken off work for the rest of the week thinking I just need to let my body heal that maybe i've been too active and not healing quick enough. As the day wears on I'm worried that this is it for the rest of my life? Really can I have made such a terrible decision that will grow to it being intolerable? Am I just being a whiny butt and need to shut up? :(

You are not being whiny. Taking the rest of the week off and getting in 64 oz of fluids a day may help. If not, get back to the doctor!

I would suggest trying G2 or pedialite. Also try drinking with a spoon or a shot glass. I would try a little when it stays down for 15 minutes have a little more every 15 minutes.

Condessa,

How are you doing?

I am going through the same situation now. It started on Sunday and I am worndering if it will ever end. My leftover Lortab has helped, but I don't want to be taking them all the time.

I was doing great up until Sunday, I don't know if I over did it or if something is actually wrong. I talked to the nurse on Monday and she said it was normal. I did vomit a few times, which probably didn't help much.

I will be 2 weeks post-op this Thursday.

The same thing is happening to me. I was sleeved on 4-25 and my left side started getting bad last Thursday. I can't even lay flat on my back or on my side anymore.

My surgeon says the pain is due to movement. But If you want to get better you have to move around. Sitting for 8 hours at my desk is killing me. Lortab takes the edge off but. Doesn't take away all the pain. Driving hurts so bad. But. I have to get to work.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with this pain. I thought something was terribly wrong

I'm happy to report that finally the pain and vomiting went away. Week 4 post op I finally felt good with no pain and some sense of normal. I really was thinking that I'd screwed up having the surgery but now that I'm 5 weeks out I feel good and think this is a good thing. I hope this finds the rest of you fellow sleevers getting better after surgery and look forward to reading about your progress.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
