thorrocks 0 Posted April 30, 2012 Does anyone know how much Protein is enough? Is more better? How much is too much? My Dr. said 8oz. a day but that totally ignores the various concentrations. Some are 42gms in 3.8 oz while others are 17gms. in 8 oz. Did anyone get any specific guidance on this?
Mews 37 Posted April 30, 2012 I was told to get in 60g a day minimum.
Webchickadee 716 Posted April 30, 2012 From what I've been reading (and that's alot from many different sources), the range is 0.4-1.1 g per lb. of ideal body weight. That is quite a wide range and depends on whether you are doing alot of resistance exercises (free weights, or machines), which tend to build muscle, as opposed to aerobic exercise (running, swimming, etc.) that are more edurance and build less muscle. So, for example. If your goal weight is 150 lbs you should consume between 60 g of Protein / day (not actively building muscle) and 165 g of Protein (if you're on a heavy weight lifting program). I like the fact that this range helps you understand how much protein to take for you individual target weight, rather than just saying EVERYONE needs 80 g of protein a day. We're all different sizes, participate in different levels of activity/exercise, etc. So I would say if you use this range and adjust based on your activity level, you should be in the ideal target protein range. 2 CamarilloCA and FluffyBleu76 reacted to this

kimmy*custis 276 Posted April 30, 2012 I was told to keep it around 60 g a day. I went in for my 2 month appt and I had a few days where I was hitting 100g a day and the nutritionist said to keep it lower...so I am.

CamarilloCA 41 Posted May 2, 2012 Pure Protein Bars from costco are delicious and have 20 grams of Protein per bar. Egg whites are also high in protein. Costco also has Quinoa, which is a grain that contains protein. Smoked salmon is also a good source.
