Thank you for sharing your story - good for everyone to know the risks, however unlikely they may be. You had really good judgment to know that something was wrong and act on it quickly!

Heal fast, get better soon!

Surgeon I spoke with this morning quoted a 0.7% chance of a portal vein thrombosis complication with any gastric surgery. Always seems small and unlikely....until it happens to you >.<

I agree, the risks are very low, until you're the one with the problem

Wow! So sorry you had to be in that small percentage and hope you are getting better. I know about being the one fitting in the minute percentage though mine was not life threatening. I have drop foot from hip revision surgery which happens to only 1% of people. This is a partial paralysis of my foot which is NO fun to live with.

Hang in there and keep us posted on how you are doing. I know your cats need a crazy lady to take care of them. :P

Scary!

Did you ever have any clotting issues before? Or anyone in your family?

Did they figure out why you had the clot? Any sort of mutation?

I hope things clear up soon! It sucks being in that small percentage that gets the complication. Did your doctor mention what blood thinners he wants you on? Also, you may want to get checked out by a hemotologist afterwards to make sure you don't have a genetic predisposition to clots. I found out I had one the hard way. Hang in there!

A newbie lurker here wishing you the best. Horrible events to you but I have to say that I am majorly impressed that you were able to drive yourself home. And four hours distance. Independent there aren't you!!! In the language of Anne of Green Gables "you are a kindred spirit"

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
