Mediterranean diet -- have to laugh

Recommended Posts

Ok, I saw a new local Endocrinologist yesterday, mainly because I needed some local support, someone to locally help me interpret lab results and the like.

I also wanted to see if he could help me come up with an action plan so I don't end up in the ER any more because I crash so Low.

Well, he ordered yet more UFC tests because he didn't believe the other test results :) because they are too high, and I don't really "look Cushing's." Cushing's is a biomedical condition. No one says you don't have high bloodpressure because you don't "look like you have high-blood-pressure..." And no plan of action to keep me out of the ER either...

ANYWAY...

He decided that I need to lose weight (ya' think???:faint:) So, he wants me to do the Mediterranean Diet. I suppose that would be ok, but it seems to be very high in Carbs, which as a bandster, I have problems with on several levels, not the least being difficulty eating them :hungry:. But it calls for drinking wine, but I don't drink wine :clap2:, especially red wine, I just have never been able to develope the taste for it.

But I thought I'd share, since it sure gave me a laugh. Ok, so yesterday it was more hysterical laughter, but laughter still...

Hehe, I think you have to get the mediterranean diet "right" before it works, otherwise its just another name for carbo loading.

Much of the secret of a traditional mediterranean diet is in the fresh veges and the amount of Omega 3's they consume. Not in humungous platefuls of Pasta.

But I can promise developing a taste for wine is very rewarding! Hic.

Vines - I will drink the wine for you. I do eat a little Pasta - sprouted grain pasta. But I have 2 cases of fine wine that I had shipped to ND and I will be drinking them when I go back - all in the name of dieting for you!!

Celest! You are absolutly the best!

From what I've been reading, it's sort of a Vegi diet, since most of the protien is to be from legumes and nuts, with little poultry or or fish, and meat once a month. The bulk of the diet is carbs, both simple and complex.

It's also supposed to be a "delicate balance" between the carbs and the other stuff. :)

Delicate balance? I don't trust myself to balance delicately around food choices. Nope. Nothing delicate on my plate. It sounds yummy...for about a day! Longer if someone else is preparing all these legumes and nuts, LOL.

Oh Crystal, just lose weight and you'll be fine!! Don't these endocrinologists know anything?! Damn brain tumor.:)

Vines I'll help you with the wine part. I like coolers so let's start there. Bartles and James would be a good start or Smirnoff or Jack's hard lemonade.....ooohhhhh over 500 calories a bottle.....never mind. Where is the Pasta and pizza?

I'm beginning to think that no-one know a damn thing about nutrition either! LOL. Doc's tell you one thing that contradicts what they told you 5 minutes ago, or that contradicts that their nutritionists.... :moony:

I have a bizarre heart condition and was placed in a Johns Hopkins study group. The helpful compound in red wine is called Resveratrol and it's now available over the counter. They put me on this 2 years ago and my last heart MRI shows no further progression of the disease.

Now, I am not one to abandon traditional medicine (I'm an RN) but I am willing to try proven alternatives. If you can't tolerate red wine, you might want to give Resveratrol a try. One word of caution, it's not recommended if you take a statin drug (lipitor, crestor, etc.)

Vines, I always read your posts! Thanks for the helpful info., support, and entertainment!! I bet your stomach hurts from all the laughter. I remember reading that you were on 800 calories a day. Now the endo wants you on the Med. diet to loose weight! Duh!!! You are right, you will get contradicting info. You know what to do. You are the expert.

It's must be so frustrating to go to another doctor and feel like you are starting over again.

Shawn
