I am going through Walter Reed at Bethesda to do my sleeve. I was wondering if anyone had it done there by Dr. Worlton. I am struggling to see the light at the end of this long tunnel with the way things are being handled right now.

Heather, I just had surgery on 2/24 with Rehgrig. I love Dr. Rehrig, but it is my understanding he will be leaving to teach for a little while. I will say that I have heard nothing but good things about Dr. Whorlton in my group meetings. (She preformed surgeries on people iin my group.) I am glad it is over, and so happy I made this choice. I am down 43 lbs total and 33 since the liquid pre-op. Best wishes, let me know of you have any other questions.

I just had mine done at Ft. Riley. The bariatric program just started here and I was in the first group to have it done here. The surgery went as I expected. I had a lot of post op complications right after and was in the hospital for 6 days. The staff on the surgery floor were fantastic!

Melissa,

Attend the monthly bariatric seminar! They have been held the first week if the month! You will get tons of information! You will need your primary dr to put in a referral for you to meet Dr. Cancelada and he will confirm if you are a candidate for the sleeve!

Then you get to attend weekly classes about nutrition and met with a dietitian. You will be assigned a case manager. You'll also need to see a psychologist/psychiatrist.

Yes, Tricare covers it. It is a new program that started here at Riley. So far the only places that have this is Ft. Lewis, Ft. Carson and now here!

Thank you so much. So nice to have the information. We are pcsing to Riley out report date is June 10. I will definitely be at the first meeting July the 1st then. I've been following the opening of the bariatric center there ever since I knew we were going there. I had also been looking into the possibility before finding out this information of paying on my own. We are currently stationed in Germany. And the doctors here have not been helpful at all. All the doctors tell me is to lose weight ... They are complete jerks about it to. I am far from lazy and I have tried so hard for so long to lose this weight but it's just not happening. Thanks so much for the information. How is your weightloss progressing?

I know this is an ancient thread, but I had VSG at JBER in Anchorage, AK with Dr Clark. It was an amazing experience and I've had 2 other friends end up going as well with wonderful outcomes.

Hi everyone! I am in San Antonio, TX. I am trying to start the process to have the VSG done at SAMMC. I went to my PCM and was told I might not be a candidate and I did not get a referral. This is so frustrating! I have been battling with my weight since I was 17. My BMI is 36.6. I have GERD, possible sleep apnea, and depression. Has anyone been through the process at SAMMC? Can you tell me how you got started? Also, does anyone know of comorbidities other than the obvious ones usually listed that they will accept? Thanks!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
