Hello,

I just had my VSG this past tuesday. I was told that if I didn't have any sort of bowel movement by Saturday to take some milk of magnesia...so I took two teaspoons of milk of magnesia. Several hours later, i had a bowel movement, but it was extremely loose (pretty much liquid) but was brown in color. Since then, I've had about 5 more of these. I don't experience any sort of stomach ache, it's just that I think I am going to pass gas, but really I have to have a bowel movement.

Does this sound normal? Anyone else experience this?

I've been drinking Water, crystal light, sugar free popsicles, and a few teaspoons of Jello.< /p>

Thank you

Hi, Kmbrlycool! I have had similar problems, but without having taken any Milk of Magnesia. I asked my surgeon about it and he suggested that it may be a reaction to the artificial sweeteners in the sugar-free jelly. If you are having S/F jelly and Crystal Lite, which I have never had, but which I think is artificially sweetened, and S/F Popsicles, you're having quite a lot of artificial sweeteners. You could try cutting back on them and seeing if that makes a difference. I hope it will!

Yeah, I'm currently enduring that 'adventure'. It seems to be slowing down though, and my doctor said that it can sometimes be a reaction to all the painkillers and drugs they pump you full of during surgery and your hospital stay.

I'm 13 days post op and have major bubble gut! I only drank Crystal light prior to surgery and that's what I'm drinking now. My tummy sounds like Chewbacca is fighting his way out! It's pretty amusing, actually....

I'm almost a month out and the first week was when my bowel movements started...I would be on the toilet and my stomach would rumble so bad it sound like someone cranked up a generator...sighs...my stools were liquid I guess from my Powerade diet I placed myself on...to add insult to injury I was in so much pain I couldn't wipe my own butt...smh...I'm forever in my boyfriends debt as he was my butt wiper for a few days...lol...

I will be sleeved in June. Im just wondering if the liquid bowel movements are a direct result of a liquid diet?

I'm having the same issue 5 days post op. My patient handbook says it is pretty normal to have this problem for a couple of weeks without worry. States as we move back to solid foods, so shall our bowels. I must admit, I would rather have this effect rather than the opposite.

From what i've read this is normal due to the liquid diet. I as sleeved on April 10th and I experienced the same thing. My VSG handbook said it is common for this to occur. I'm now on the pre select food stage and have experienced the opposite. Until tomorrow, i have only been allowed to eat 5 items as part of the transition. I now find that with adding these 5 items i'm not going at all unless I take a stool softener. I guess it's all a part of the body making adjustments. Maybe things will get normal at the 6 week mark as i will be eating solid foods again...

I was sleeved on Feb 3rd. I had that problem on the liquid diet only. After the surgery I have been the exact opposite. I wouldn't have a bowel movement for days and days. Finally that is after control. My dr says Miralax is better to take.

Yes, completely normal when not eating solids, this will change when you move to full liquids, then mushies, Fiber helps. Beans and sweet potatoes are loaded with fiber and miralax and benefiber help.

My Dr gave me an Rx for liquid colace (for the love of God don't take it if you can help it!) and also suggested Milk of Magnesia which works wonders. It's like pooping out soft fluffy clouds....and butterflies.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
