I work in a factory that is closing by the end of the year. I am in HR and have already started looking for another job. I had an interview with a company that went great, and I think I will have an offer sometime next week. Problem with that is, I don't have a surgery date yet. I have Empire BC/BS insurance that covers WLS with relatively few hoops to jump through--or so that is what I understand. I have had the seminar, psych eval, nutrition counseling, and I meet the BMI requirements--easily. The psych eval was supposed to be ready by Friday of last week and the coordinator said she would get my stuff typed up and sent off for approval "as soon as possible." I already did all the leg work and long phone calls to get a medical case management set up so all she has to do is fax everything in. When the approval (I am not going to even thing about it being a denial) comes in, I still have to have an appointment with the surgeon, then an egd and 2 week liquid diet. If I knew a surgery date before I was offered a new job I would probably be able to discuss it with them before I start, but I don't know how to make arrangements with them about it if I don't have a date. On the insurance issue, I could always take COBRA until after the surgery.....

I am so overwhelmed with this that I am about to lose my mind. I have to take another job if I get an offer because, besides it seeming like an awesome job, come September-ish my current job will end. However, I also feel like I have to have the surgery no matter what and the new company's insurance may or may not pay for it. Self pay is out and I don't want to put it off any longer.

I know I probably need to just try and relax and let it play out, but I am so anxious....

Any advice on how to speed up the process?

I've never had a problem with negotiating time with a new employer. Wait until they offer you the job, then tell them you accept it, you appreciate the opportunity, however, you have an upcoming surgical procedure that may result in your being off work for a week or two. You do not have to tell them what you are having done and they are not required to make you answer.

Yeah, that's the way I would handle it, too. Be sure to mention that you understand you will be taking the time off as leave without pay...lol.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
