Day 2 In Hospital, Starting To Worry

Recommended Posts

I posted about the issues that I'm having here: Clear liquids right now and have had almost no problem getting them down.

My doctor came in about an hour ago and said that he was not going to send me home until I have no problem with liquids. He said that "we have a couple days before we become concerned with my nutrition."

So what does that mean? I should have asked, but was too scared. How would they get nutrition in me? Would it be IV meds or a feeding tube?

I'm feeling really anxious, depressed and just plain scared.

Mab, I am so sorry to hear. Try to relax, it might take a day or two for the medicines to start working and give you relief. Sending prayers your way.

Yes they would have to give you TPN or Total Parenteral Nutrition through your IV. They would probably tell you to keep trying to tolerate liquids until your stomach decides to cooperate. I'm so sorry you're going through these issues. Stay encouraged and I will be praying for you.

You are in the right place! They will give you TPN if you can't eat. Take little sips at a time and let us know what's going on with you. :)

Man. I just had a sleeve done April 24, 2012 at Cabrini Hospital in Alexandria, la. Dr. Sam Bledsoe. I went in at 283.5. Today (sat the the 28th) I'm at an even 270. The surgery went well. About 10 hrs later I old feel bubbling in the bottom of my lungs. Then about every 20 minutes vomiting. They think it was a reaction to the anethsiesia. It cost me an extra night, and ultrasound, and a CAT scan. So far so good. I've been following the liquid diet recommendation for post op to a tee. Might try a lil oatmeal tomorrow or Monday. Whatever you do, don't get discouraged. It's just part of the healing process after major surgery. :-))

On a lighter note Mab. When the surgeon came in for rounds I asked him to give me an idea of what he took out and what he left me with. He started laughing and said he'd been doing bariatric surgery since 2009. He said my stomach was by far the largest they had ever removed! Hahahahahahahaha. I'm 6 foot 1 and prior to surgery around 280-285. All of my life I loved to eat and knew I could chow down. But hearing that gave me a good laugh. He said he left me with about a 4-6 oz new stomach. :-)

When I had my procedure, I was on Clear Liquids for some time and then full liquids after that. Didnt get anything even soft in consistency until 1 month out. Take your time and trust your doctors. You'll be fine!

I know every doctor has different protocol etc., but just to give you an idea, I was on liquids through week six! It was not till week six that I began mushies, and at that point we are talking about a tablespoon at most of yogurt or a bite of a scrambled egg. Still had to supplement with Protein Drinks. For a lot of us it is a very slow process. I am doing great. Have had no problems with nutrition or dehydration. Hang in there! Sending lots of good thoughts your way for a super speedy recovery and so that you may be on your way home soon!!!!

@mnbsleev...I'd go slap off if I had to stay on liquids that long! Hahahaha. Felt just a tad nauseated this am about 20 minutes after I got up. Considering the six holes and the size of the my old stomach that they pulled out I feel pretty good. Just trying to get used to the new changes after 52 years of good eats :-) I'm going t the store in a bit to pick up some mush foods. Mashed taters, sugar free oatmeal, and some eggs. The plan says I can start the mush on day 4-6. I have no problem swallowing Vitamins so I think should be ok.

Amazing. I tried 1 28 gram packet of Quaker instant grits. I went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and got a set (4 ea) of appetizer spoons and forks and a cool Cuisinart blender with different size container attachments. I was a le to eat 8 little spoons of grits over about 20 minutes and felt STUFFED! Roughly 3/4 of the serving (75 cals). So far so good. I can tell already this surgery is having the desired effect. I am so glad! Down 14.5 pounds in 5 days. I expect that to slow somewhat with the gradual intake of actual food :-). Glucose= 138 wooo hoooo! :-)

UPDATE:

I am home now after being discharged yesterday. I am on full liquids until the doctor says otherwise. I still don't feel like myself, and though I understand that it's normal, it hasn't been easy at all. My doctor prescribed Valium which has helped with my anxiety and when things become just too overwhelming.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
