4-Days Post Op - Dizzy!

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I went home yesterday and had a very unrestful night. I have eaten some 1/2 SF 1/2 regular Jello (the pure SF really made me nauseous). I can hardly stand up from my chair because the room is just spinning.

Any suggestions. Looked through my paperwork and don't see anything for this symptom.

Are you drinking enough fluids? Dehydration is serious and you must drink more than eat at this point.

"Many people experience dizziness, faintness or light-headedness when they stand up. This is called postural hypotension (low blood pressure), and is due to a drop in blood pressure when going from a sitting to a stanging position. Usually, this is not a problem, as long as it occurs occasionally, and is often treated with the simple advice of "get up more slowly". Dehydration can increase this effect because of the limited amounts of Fluid in the body so special precautions should be taken when changing from horizontal to vertical."

Also, you still could be under the influence of the anesthesia. It wears off slower on some people.

I was dizzy for 14 days starting the moment I came out of surgery. I think it was because I was dehydrated. I did not want to do anything but sleep due to the nausea medication. I was sleeved on the 10th of April. I regreted my decision as soon as I came home. Now all this time out I feel great and no more issues!

I would think it could be related to a blood sugar level that is much lower than what your body is used to.

It could actually be not enough carbs. I felt very dizzy and foggy for a couple of weeks after surgery and my doc suggested I try to get in more carbs. Don't get me wrong. Fluids and Protein are important but if you're getting it all in you may need the extra boost to your blood sugar levels.

Check with your doctor though as you may even have low blood pressure. Better to be safe.

My PCP told me that being dehydrated thickens our blood and causes very low blood pressure. Getting dizzy is not fun. ;)

I got dizzy, nauseous and a headache. I couldn't stand up without getting the spins. I was super tired and depressed. You guessed it... dehydrated! Now I've been powering fluids and it is like a miracle. I feel a thousand times better. I don't have room for food since I need the Water now, but one day without much to eat is preferable to one day without much to drink.

There is no downside to increasing your fluids. It'll most likely help. If it doesn't, you should probably call your physician and ask his/her advice.

Cheers!

Thanks everyone. No blood sugar or BP lows, have the monitors for those. I thought it might be dehydration. I am still very dizzy all day, hoping that I can sleep better tonight and feel better tomorrow.

I am with a lot of those out here that I hear commenting on the frustration about the varying diets. My Dr. has me on clear fluids for 2 full weeks. I have no idea how I am going to make that, but I guess that I will do it one day at a time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
