AJAgwu 5 Posted April 27, 2012 I had my sleeve on 1/24. The surgeon did not see a hiatal hernia during surgery an I never had GERD symptoms preop. Every time I try to stop the PPI since surgery I have severely painful reflux within 24hrs and as soon as I start the PPI again it goes away. The surgeon thought it was spasms and not reflux. I went or an Esophogram today and was old I now have a hiatal hernia and that is the cause of the GERD. I don't talk to my surgeon about it until next Tuesday but I have never tea of anybody developing this after surgery? Is this common, preventable, or just cooncidetal timing that I developed tis so soon after surgery?
BlackBerryJuice 349 Posted April 27, 2012 I suppose it's possible that your sleeve is so narrow, that it's actually able to slip out easier now than your full-sized stomach would before. Technically, weightloss generally improves hiatal hernias, so your surgeon will likely tell you to wait it out and see whether your symptoms improve once you reach your goal weight. I also suspect that once your sleeve stretches out a bit, it might be less likely to pop out through that opening. Alternatively, it can still be fixed surgically, but they use a different (simpler) procedure, where they just throw in some stitches in the diaphragm to tighten the opening, whereas the traditional procedure involves some additional steps, including wrapping the stomach around the esophagus to tighten it. Ms skinniness 3,003 Posted April 27, 2012 Blackberry, you have a lot of knowledge in this area. Is it possible that post sleeve the stomach has been irritating the abdominal wall, which could result in a hernia? Just curious. AJguWu I hope things get better for you. AJAgwu 5 Posted May 7, 2012 Turns out I have a para-esophageal hernia that needs surgical attention. There is an extra pouch that developed at the top of my sleeve and is also impacting my diaphragm/esophagus. Once this is repaired the GERD should be resolved. I might feel some additional restriction as well. The recovery effort will be the same as my sleeve I was told.
