Unsure If I Should Stick With Sleeve Procedure

Recommended Posts

I was at the surgeon this week and decidedfor the sleeve over the lapand....when I came home my husand (he actually did the lapband earlier this yr) said he heard negative things about the sleeve and I should do the band instead. I'm confused as I liked the fact that 1. theres no foreign object 2. no port and constant dr. visits 3. the hunger hormone is diminished 4. no vomiting like the band 5. more drastic weight loss.

He thinks its not safe.....

tell your husband to do research in scientific literature. The complication rates are actually a lot higher for the lapband than they are for the sleeve. For example a friend of mine her mom and her aunt both had the band put on a couple of years ago, about a year later her aunt almost died because the band moved and was breaking the blood flow to her internal organs. Her mom is ok and has had no problems yet but that was very scary for them. The negative thing I can say about the sleeve is that because its still considered a new procedure, there is no real long term research on it, but that can also be said about the lapband since its also pretty new (literature wise). But in the past few years more and more research shows the complication rates are much higher for the band compared to the sleeve, I was going to do the band when I first started my journey but after much research I decided on the sleeve. I specially like the part that I don't have something inside me that can kill me and that I have to keep getting filled or unfilled. I encourage you both to do some research and also talk to the surgeon. Best of luck!

Hi, the sleeve has been around for a long time, just not as a weight loss surgery. Doctors would remove portions of stomachs due to ulcers or cancer. I research this because I thought the same thing. I have the crap band and I have had nothing but problems. Oh and in 2 years I have only had one fill. Throwing up Water and food non stop. I get the band removed May 14th and Im revising to the sleeve!

I just got sleeved Monday. The woman who I shared a room with had her lap band removed due to erosion and during surgery they found a huge amount of scar tissue they had to removed. Definitely not a normal case but when she said she should have done the sleeve which made me feel so much better about my decision

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
