Travelling to Mexico alone

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have been lurking on this site for a while now and am getting closer to deciding which doc to use in Mexico. My problem is I have no companion so will be travelling from Calgary alone. I'm really nervous about being in a different country where I don't speak the language and going through all of this stuff by myself. Has anyone else travelled to Mexico alone and was it all okay? Any reassurance or cautions would be welcome.

Kim

Hi Kim,

I did travel to Mexico but I didn't travel alone. That was my biggest fear about going to a different country. I'm sure it's OK but if you can get someone to go with you I would strongly advise it.

The doctor I used did not have the best english speaking staff so without someone being with me I would have really felt lost. Don't get me wrong, my experience was great and I have been thrilled with my band and my results but I am glad I had a companion (my mom) with me.

Good luck and I wish you well.

I had my surgery done in Tijuana by the Kuri Team (I say team because there were 3 surgeons and 2 anesthesiologists!). I took my husband, but I definitely could have gone alone. They picked me up from the airport, walked me through every step, drove me to the hotel, and took me back over the border to the airport. It was a very comfortable experience.

That being said, I'm pretty independent. So, if you're someone that needs your hand held for moral support... you should bring someone.

Feel free to message me if you have any other questions.

Thanks everyone and thanks Yoda for the bump. Okiegirl, I will likely be going to Dr. Ortiz but not until October. I just can't get the money together before that but thanks for the offer, it would have been great to meet you there. You all have eased my fears so I think I will be okay. I have learned so much here about the ups and downs of having this surgery and the ups certainly seem to win. I will continue to come here for support as my time gets near. Best to you all.

HI! I went to TJ and had surgery with Dr. Kuri alone. It really wasn't any big deal. I wanted to go alone, i had relatives that wanted to go with me but i didn't want any added stress ( relatives naturally get on my nerves lol) I wanted my husband to stay home & keep things as normal as possible for our son. You will be fine! Good Luck

Hi,

I went to Dr. Ortiz in April by myself and had no difficulty whatsoever (well, the delay getting out of San Francisco on the trip home was a bitch, but...). A driver met me at the airport, took me across the border and then to the clinic. After the pre-op stuff, he took me to the GORGEOUS hotel, checked me in and everyone there spoke outstanding English. The same with the medical staff. That afternoon, I walked to a mall a few blocks away, and had no difficulty since most of the shop employees were billigual--more than I can say. After the surgery, I stayed the night in the clinic and then was taken back to the hotel by Mrs. Ortiz (a charming lady). The next morning, the driver picked up several of us and took us back across the border to the airport. I had flight delays in the US and didn't get back to Boise until almost midnight, then drove myself another hour home. I was a pooped puppy the next day, but The whole experience was great. I would go alone in a heartbeat again, only this time I would do more shopping...

I was just banded on Wed. 8/16 by Dr. Ortiz. Looking back, I wouldn't hesitate to go alone. You will be well taken care of. But....if you would like someone to go with you, I need to go for my first fill in the beginning of October. Let me know and maybe we can schedule it for the same time and I'll help you out. :biggrin1:

Dear List Mates: Please let me know your success with surgery in Mexico. What was the quality of care like? How much did it cost?

I am gearing up to surgery late fall, first of the year. Thank you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
