Travelling to Mexico alone

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have been lurking on this site for a while now and am getting closer to deciding which doc to use in Mexico. My problem is I have no companion so will be travelling from Calgary alone. I'm really nervous about being in a different country where I don't speak the language and going through all of this stuff by myself. Has anyone else travelled to Mexico alone and was it all okay? Any reassurance or cautions would be welcome.

Kim

Hi Tagger (Kim)....welcome. I didn't go to Mexico so I can't really comment but I do know several ppl have gone alone and they might have some input; however not many (if at all!) in the Canadian thread. You may want to re-post your query in the "General" thread...you will likely get more of a response there!

Just a suggestion!

Kim- I went alone, but I grew up in Southern California and feel comfortable in Mexico because I've spent a lot of time there. What concerns you the most? What doctor are you using? Feel free to PM me, but I'm sure you will be fine.

I also traveled to Mexico alone. I was a little freaked out, till I got there. Everyone was so nice and willing to help. My best friend just went alone as well. Its not too big of a deal. Just to be on the safe side I didnt wear or take any jewlery or credit cards.

Where in Mexico are you going?

I went there with dh and there was a girl there when Amy and I went for our surgeries and she went alone and she had no problems at all. They pick you up and drop you off and totally take care of you while your there.

Another ideal, I know I wouldn't care to help and there are probably others whom are going there for our fills and I wouldn't care at all to schedule one when your going to be there at the guest house if your going to Dr. Sanchez, who has done over 6600 of these and I would be there to help if you would like. Just a suggestion, but you would do fine on your on as well. Just an ideal.

Thanks everyone for your input. I am thinking I will probably go to Dr. Ortiz or Dr. Kuri in October or November. If anyone else is scheduled to go at that time it would be great to try to go at the same time. I'm not planning on telling anyone that I'm doing this so it is nice to know that you are all out there with support and encouragement. Gee, I'm usually so brave - not sure why this feels so scary.

Hi Kim. I was planning to go down alone when a girlfriend (the only person other than my husband and son that I told) decided that she wanted it done, too. However nice it was to have her there, it would have been fine on my own. From what I've read here all the Mex drs take good care of their patients, picking them up from the airport, taking them to the hotel, even checking up on them at the hotel etc. You'll be fine. Your courage is in the decision to get banded. Congratulations!

Hi Tagger! Welcome. There's ONE girl that I know of for sure on here, from Canada (from BC actually), who went to mexico a few months ago, and is doing really well. You can search for her posts if you go to the advanced search, then type in the 'author' area, ragergirl. That's her name on here! Good luck

I went to mexico but had a freind and I was going to go alone but she ended up coming in the end. I was bound and determined to go alone or not. I ended up having to stay long though mainly cause of the flight availability sucked. I did ok and I think I would have been ok alone and prob wouldve rested alot more .....lol. Id do it again and Id go alone too. SOOOOO GOOD LUCK YOU will do awesome and the harder something is to do the better the reward

Tagger,

I went to Dr.Kuri in July. There were a few people that were alone and they did fine. Miguel picks you up at the San Diego Airport and takes you right to the office. They take you down to the receptionist to sign in. There are restaurants right across the street for your last meal. Miguel drives you to the hotel after surgery and then picks you up and takes you to the airport. I think you will be totally fine. You don't really have to find your way anywhere. The hotel and hospital were both really nice and clean. The rooms at the hospital were really nice and you can bring DVDs to watch. Just go for it! You'll be fine.

Well the doctor charged me 8750.00 and that included the hotel and pickup and drop off for the airport. My flight was 650 ish. Quotes that I got in Canada were around 16 thousand. I went with a friend so that was part of my decision making process and I wanted a doctor with a lot of esperience.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
