Post -Op Pantry Staples?

Recommended Posts

I'm going to be sleeved on May10th, and am trying to stock my pantry with lots of yummy things I can drink/eat for the first few weeks post op. Any suggestions? Protein powders, Jello, etc.

Also, any other suggestions for antacids/heating pads that I might need afterward? I just don't know what all I need.

Thanks!!

Interested to hear replies to this too!

I bought a Sunbeam king size heating pad (12x24" & has a 9' cord), bought gas-x strips, low sodium chicken broth, some Gatorade G2, some Protein bars.

I also bought chewable Multivitamins, chewable Vitamin D3 (as I normally take 5000 IU a day anyway), and just ordered chewable Calcium citrate too.

I did buy some sugar free puddings & jellos, but those are going down as the kids are eating them! LOL

Don't buy too much! I made this mistake, stocking up on broths, cream Soups, soy milk, yogurt, pudding and applesauce multi packs, etc. Unfortunately I was shopping with a full stomach mindset. It didn't register that it might take me 2-3 days to go through one can of Soup, for example. I have enough Protein powder to last through the end of the year.

Make a list of what you think you need, then buy about 1/4 of what you THINK you will consume.

Oh ya Whooz... I did the same. I am over six months out and STILL have Soup that will never be eaten. My advice is to take it easy on what to buy for post op. I liked Unjury chicken soup flavored Protein and their chocolate as well. Regular old chicken broth also went down pretty well at first. Lots of sugar free popsicles. I'm not sure where you are located, but here in the greater Richmond VA area, food Lion has the best popsicles in a bag on the bottom shelf. Cheap and tasty and the lowest in cals/carbs.

Gas-X strips, bottled Water, Crystal Light. Everything else I bought is still filling the cabinets, fridge, and freezer. I seriously over estimated how much food I would need. Even with two teen aged boys in the house, I still have sf pudding, sf Jello, and sf popsicles. Never did touch any canned Soup.< /p>

For me it wasn't so much the food / Vitamin / Protein supplies (your post-op tastes are a bit unpredictable), as the non-food supplies I ended up wanting. Small spoons / forks (espresso spoons, appetizer forks), small plates and bowls (even tiny dipping bowls - perfect for that 2 tablespoons of Beans or whatever you'll be eating), a mug warmer (it's going to take you 45 minutes to drink that 4 oz of Soup, it's nice if it stays warm), a collection of small tupperware (it's nice if you can save leftovers like soup in little single-serving containers)... those are the ones I recall off the top of my head.

Oh, and I found out after I'd been using a heating pad two days in the hospital that my surgeon wanted me icing, not heating. It might be a good idea to ask...

Make good use of that soup and give it to the food Bank!! :)

Great idea! I haven't gotten to finish anything while still warm since surgery.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
