I have Double Diabetes

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am currently doing research on the Lapband procedure. I am about 150 pounds overweight. I lost all that weight on my own, with diet and lots of walking and kept it off for several years. After I lost 50 lbs. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Even after continuing to lose weight, walking everyday for an hour and eating very well, I ended up with type 1 diabetes, where my body decided not to make insulin any longer. I opted for the insulin pump and unfortunately I think that was a mistake. I was being treated for the type 1 part of the diabetes and not the type 2 part, I was still insulin resistant. Because my type 1 wasn't reconized soon enough I have permanet nerve damage and a bunch of other stuff that affects my energy and for a long time my actual physical strength. Add depression and it all equaled gaining all this weight back. Does anyone have any similiar situation? Is there any type 1 diabetics that have had the lapband procedure. I am concerned that the insulin I will have to continue to take will defeat any success for me with the lapband procedure. And I don't have any confidence that the type 2 part will go away either since it didn't after I lost all the weight and kept it off for several years.

One more thing, does anyone ever go into the chat rooms? I am CCNV.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
