I will be banded on Aug 21st and I am very excited! I had to go to great lengths for Aetna to approve - but I finally got the approval! I am pretty informed from all of you regarding the surgery and such, but I am trying to figure out how my life will change!!! I've always lived for eating out with my friends and family and now I am wondering what to do for fun! (I'm sure I will think of something!) Any suggestions of portable foods to take during the 2nd week after surgery? I will be going back to work and need to take something to satisfy me and I have no clue what to take and how much Water to drink, etc. I'm looking for any information you have to offer! Thanks so much!

Surgery 8/21/2006

Beginning weight 235lbs.

Ideal weight 145lbs.

Denise who is doing your band? The surgeon should have a list of allowable foods. It will depend where you are in the list, thin liquids, thick liquids, mushies or regular food. My doc had thick liquids the second week and I was able to advance to mushies as I tolerated them. So by days 8 - 10 I was pretty much eating normal but soft foods.

I don't drink Water. But I do drink 5 - 6 glasses (16 ounces) of Wyler's light pink lemonade a day.

Congrats on getting Aetna to approve. I hear they are one tough cookie.

Welcome to LBT.

Myra

Dr Carter is my surgeon. I did the initial visit in January of this year hoping I could schedule surgery right away before Aetna came back and denied me. I'm hoping the Dr's office will refresh my memory on what I can and can't eat, etc. - I'm just looking for more information from people who have "been there!"

Thanks for the input! All input is appreciated!

Is he one of the docs in Arlington? We have another lady on here that is being banded in a few weeks by a Dr. Carter.

Yes - he is in Arlington. My PCP has nothing but positive comments about him and I was very pleased with him in January. I would love to hear from anyone who is having surgery this month or has used Dr Carter in the past! Thanks for the info!

Hi Denise: I am being banded on Sept. 8th. My orginal surgery date was August 11th, however as you probably already know.. Dr. Carter has been ill. I really hated to have to wait another month... but it's out of my control... You know just grin and bear it!

I didn't know Dr Carter was ill, but I do know that he had to cancel and reschedule some of his surgeries. Sorry you have to wait..... It WILL be worth the wait! Hang in there! I'll let you know how it goes after my surgery Monday!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
