When Did You Start Intense Workout After Surgery

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on 3/19/12 and I'm soooo ready to start working out but I'm getting different responses on when I should start my intense workouts. When did you hit the gym hard after surgery?

I think I hit the gym "hard" about 2+ months out - as in, bootcamp workouts. I started working out at low intensity before that - light weights, elliptical, etc.

I think that I'm still at low intensity compared to many others here, but it feels intense to me! LOL I started on the treadmill and exercise bike about 3 weeks out, weights at 6 weeks, and have been gradually building up my workouts each month. I bought a fit bit yesterday and we'll see what it has to tell me after a few days of use.

I started walking right away and by week two increased intensity. I was cleared for spin class and riding my bike between weeks 4 and six. Pretty much after about week 7 or 8 I was at full speed.

Did you get a personal trainer? If not how did you know what exercise to do

This is good info to know. I'll need to tell my trainer he won't see me for a few weeks. I'm going to add it to my list of questions for the surgeon too.

I was cleared for it at six weeks, but I didn't actually do anything till nine+ months post-op. One intense WL thing at a time for me...

I was technically cleared to do anything at 6 weeks, but was told to focus heavily on cardio and building up fitness, and not worry as much about weights.

you wanna do some weights to tone the areas that you are losing from, the sooner you start toning the better your body will look. i have been working on my arms since 4 weeks out, and i have nice little muscles under the jiggly bits. Also, weight lifting helps burn fat even after your done lifting

I was cleared to do "whatever my body will allow" after my post op visit (day 8). My only limitations were to not lift more than 15-20 pounds for a couple of more weeks. I went for my first bike ride on day 8! I did find that my muscles were CRAZY FATIGUED!!. That I was not expecting. Now on week 4, I'm still biking, but still working at increasing my endurance and stamina.

Thanks for all the great info. I'm a little over 4 weeks and I'm going to go and buy a bike tomorrow. One of my goals is to get on a bike and ride again:-). Thanks everyone and good luck:-). ~Jenn¥~

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
