clk 3,519 Posted April 22, 2012 I've seen many posts on this and I think the general consensus is that the difference in bougie size is so small that it doesn't really add up to a noticeable difference to the patient. ~Cheri
Rootman 1,101 Posted April 22, 2012 I agree with CLK above, it seldom matters. The bougie is just there to ensure that the Dr. does not accidentily close off the stomach or make it too tight by running THROUGH the stomach and THROUGH the pyloric valve to hold it open, the staple line does not snug up against the form, it's just there to provide some clearance. illgeturhairdid 176 Posted April 22, 2012 My sister and I were having this discussion this morning. My bougie size was much larger than what I find most ppl on VST have. I was a 44 or 46 I believe.. Since December 5, 2011 I've lost 71 pounds for a grand total of 84 pounds lost. Sounds like my larger bougie is working just fine! I asked my doctor why he uses that size and he said he has found that with a slightly large bougie there is less chance of heart burn issues developing. A few weeks ago I was having a lot of HB issues, I'd hate to see what it would be like with a smaller bougie!
Lissa 2,631 Posted April 22, 2012 I think I'm a 34 bougie, and I've never had heart burn issues from surgery. I figured I would because I had horrible heart burn with both pregnancies. It's interesting how different people react to this surgery.
Yorkie Fan 16 Posted April 22, 2012 I read an article about 4 months ago about the differences in sizes. If I remember correctly the difference is about a tablespoon. So not much at all.
