Me And My Relationship With Cereal Has To End! Ugh!

Recommended Posts

Ok ok...I am 3 weeks post op and for the last week or so I have had Frosted Flakes at least twice per day!!! DRY AND WITH MILK!!!! SMH!! I am sooooo disappointed in myself! I think I am depressed that I've only lost 13 pounds since my surgery. I have made up in my mind starting TOMORROW the pity party STOPS!!!

The first step in overcoming an issue is to realize there IS an issue! Get rid of the Cereal and concentrate on your Protein and Water goals. BTW, there is no "only" when it comes to weight loss. Next time you go to the store pick up 3 5 lb bags of flour and carry them around while you shop. It will make you realize how much weight you've already dropped and give you some perspective on how successful you've already been. Then it will motivate you to continue following your plan (70g of Protein, 64oz of water) so that you continue to lose those 5 pound bags of flour! :)

Every time I get frustrated about my weight loss, I think about how many bags of flour or sugar I've lost. I certainly don't want to carry around 18 bags of either one...and my knees, hips and ankles thank me for it daily! :)

I am 3 months post-op and have found a need for Cereal, just not the sugary kind. I take a small amount of Fiber One with a little skim milk and Splenda. Part of my program is keeping my bowels regular. The cereal combined with 2 figs a day, some salad, a few walnuts, and proper Water drinking is doing the trick.

I got a piece of wrapped candy the other day and had to spit it out. The ultra-sweetness disgusted me. One can lose the craving.

right before my surgery I donated 2 boxes of frosted flakes the food pantry.... and a whole bunch of other food. 13 boxes of cake mix ws a little too much. Clean out all your cubbards, there wil be no temptation.

I have Kashi Go Lean nearly every day, too. It's soooo crunchy - and high in Protein, as well. For a treat, I put 1/8 cup of the Kashi Crunch in my Chobani. (It's higher in calories -and lower in protein than the orig Kashi... but OH SO GOOD!).

I am sure you know it but the carbs are a no-no, have to stay under 20 per day

Big Craig, There is no hard and fast rule that I know of about staying under 20 carbs per day. That said, everyone's body reacts differently to carbs and I unofficially tried to keep my carbs very low for the first six months. Once I started doing more intense workouts, I found that I had to increase my carbs to be able to have enough energy to finish a 30 minute cardio workout. I'd start really dropping out about 15 minutes into my bike ride, but once I added in some good carbs (as opposed to junk food), it became much easier to reach the distance and time goals I've set for myself. Now I'm actually increasing the resistance on the workouts, which is only possible because of the carbs.

PDXMan and MassIndex have a big thread under Fitness and Nutrition about carbs and exercise. Since they are both running marathons, I figure they have some experience in this.

I did not mean to imply to Mrs Brown that carbs themselves are bad. But, she stated that she is having an issue with a sugary cereal. If a food causes you a problem, it's time to eliminate it from the diet until you can get it under control. My personal achilles heel is baked cheetos. I love the darn things and will eat an entire bag of them at a sitting. They are a slider food for me, so I must keep them out of my house. If I'm planning to have some, then I'll buy the small vending machine size, enjoy the treat, and work out a little longer to make up for them. But, I've learned that it has to be a very occassional treat or I stall.

20 carbs a day?!? That's worse than being on Atkins! I work out 6 hours a week I need more than that, I need at least triple that.

My Nut said I could only have 5 grams of carbs per meal. That would be about 15 gr total. In my opinion, I think it's rather low so I don't always stick to it.

I know every nutrition plan is different but that just seem extremely low. Especially with a workout plan, icouldnt imagine only getting 15 grams a day I wouldn't be able to get out of bed. But if it work for you I gues that is the important thing.

I really appreciate the NON-JUDGING comments guys!!! I have really been agonizing over the cereal thing. I can't throw them out or stop buying them because it is the only NON-SOY cereal my son can have. He is allergic to soy. So I have to FIGHT the urge BIG TIME!!!! I am back at work for the first time since my surgery today and THERE IS NO FROSTED FLAKES HERE!!! LOL!!!

I agree I do not limit my carbs BUT you need protien and if your eating frosted flakes there is no room for your protien. Its not like you can eat enough of it to NOT lose weight but you need protien to heal and be healthy now. I am glad you posted-- you are aware your body needs better nutrition!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
