Protein Shakes Without Sugar Substitutes

Recommended Posts

I am awaiting insurance approval and in the meantime have been doing research on the pre- op and post- op diet. I have an allergy to sugar substitutes and was wondering if anyone is in the same boat and may have some suggestions on Protein Shakes.< /p>

You're going to have to use unflavored Protein Powder and put it in something that you can have that's low calorie.

Syntrax nectar Naturals are pretty good if you like fruity. Natural 100% Gold Standard and Natural Isopure are pretty popular, too. There are very limited flavor options out of the can and most of them are unflavored but you can do a lot to jazz up a shake with real fruit, cocoa powder, or Peanut Butter so that shouldn't be an issue.

My favorite powder is unflavored and I choose it over other options all the time. There is a growing group of bodybuilders that are all natural and refuse to use artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners so you will have options, just not as many as you might like.

Thanks so much for the info! I hadn't thought to look at Whole Foods for Protein powder but I definitely will when I do this weeks grocery shopping. I'll also check out the brands you've mentioned. Thanks again!

Also, some doctors allow carnation instant Breakfast powder or pre made drinks and I believe they have sugar in them. Maybe half that and half unflavored to lose more weight.

I had a bariatric patient at my last job who recommended a Protein called "About Time". It is 100% whey Protein with no artificial sweeteners of any type - uses natural Stevia for sweetness.

http://www.tryabouttime.com/

I have tasted one flavor, Birthday Cake, and it was pretty decent. Their website offers samples, or you can order single-use bottles off of LuckyVitamin.com to try all the flavors :D

Hope this helps,

Jay Robb uses Stevia too but it's kind of expensive. The containers are small.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
