Am I the only one hungry on this liquid post op diet? I thought u would never feel hungry after surgery. I thought that after surgery u would have to force yourself to get anything in ur stomach. I was very nauseous the first 2 days but now I'm just starving. Could it be that my doctor didn't take out my ghrelin hormone?

I'm totally there with u.I had my surgery april 3rd and I'm still always hungry...I believed as u that my hunger and want to eat would go way...mine hasn't and I'm totally scared I'm eating to much... I was told this would go away that I wouldn't feel hungry so often.but it hasn't....

Are u eating regular food now? My sx was on the 17th so I still have a long way to go before I'm able to eat at least mushy foods.

What you're feeling may not be hunger at all - it could be acid rolling around in your new tummy. I asked my doctor why my stomach was growling and he asked me why I thought it was growling. I told him because it's making noises and I can feel it. He said that stomach's do that. I think that several of us are on PPI's post surgery, ask your doctor if that's a possibility for you.

This surgery has changed everything that I thought I knew about hunger. I only trust my tummy to tell me when it's had enough because differentiating between actual hunger and head hunger - not to mention my perception of actual hunger - is really difficult. Basically I eat 3 times a day and that's it.

You both need to talk to your doctors about acid reducers. There is head hunger immediately post op, and then there's the hungry feeling produced because your body is still making acid like you're going to eat a whole buffet. Once that acid reducer kicks in, you'll feel less hunger.

good luck!!

And stock up on SF popsicles. When I have a bout of head hunger now, I grab one and suck the heck out of it. It has really helped me. My favorites are the Popsicle brand (yellow box) tropical. I like the orange and the pineapple and let my husband have the fruit punch. Blech.

That makes a lot of sense. I'll have to ask the doc @ my post op appt this coming week. I'm only 5 days out and I wasn't even this darn hungry preop.

WOW Lissa...I'm not sleeved yet but it is great to know about the acid reducers. Also, is there a difference in bougie size that would make some people more or less hungry?

Well I was given a prescription for omeprazole that I've been taking since day 1. Probably the fact that I have a husband and 3 kids that still have to eat and I smell their food it's just making it worse.

Gingersnap (LOVE the picture, btw), The difference in bougie size is so small that I don't think it really affects how hungry we are. Bougies are measured in millimeters, so the difference between a 32 and a 40 is about {this}. I think my doctor said mine was a 34, but it's not really significant overall.

I've been successfully treated for acid by good PPIs since surgery, no problems there. But I have never lost my hunger from this operation, not at all! I just posted about this, but I got my hunger back about two days post-op (right after I stopped dry-heaving LOL) and it's been with me ever since. That said, it's totally still do-able, so don't sweat it too much!! I think the stats show that *most* people lose their hunger with VSG, but that is definitely not ALL people.

Great information to know. My sister had the VSG 3 years ago and has had problems with feeling hunger. She can't eat a lot in one sitting but feels hungry soon afterwards, so she finds herself grazing on the leftovers. She is constantly popping Pepcid to help with heartburn/reflux.

I'm almost a full week post op and have started today having that I'm hungry feeling. I have alot of gurgling and never thought about the acid. I go back to the surg in 2 days and will ask about the reducers to see if that will stop the hungry feelings. Thanks for the info Lissa!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
