Hiatal Hernia Question.

Recommended Posts

Just completed all my tests today. The radiologist said I have a hiatal hernia. Does this mean that the doctor will automatically repair it during vsg surgery?

Yep. I had one too. Kill two birds with one stone.

Yep he'll fix it. I didn't know I had one until I woke up from surgery and my husband told me. Sure helps to explain why I was having such horrible heartburn the past year!

Just an FYI, a few of us have experienced a little extra discomfort from the repair - it has to do with something being tightened during the fix. For instance, I was and still am not really able to burp, which can be uncomfortable and frustrating, but I think it's only temporary. Thank goodness we have another place gas can escape!!! I'm going to be a real pleasure to be around when I return to work next week!

I had a horrible hiatial nernia repaired during my sleeve surgery. 1/3 of my stomach was up through my diaphragm. I was happy to say though I did not experience and pain or complications from that either. Just alot of coughing for several weeks while the diaphragm repair heals.

No burping! Now that I will miss. Thanks for the post. And for the laugh, too. Very funny.

I had a small one repaired during my VSG surgery. My surgeon said that he wasn't going to go to all the trouble of making a new stomach just to have it slip up through the hernia afterwards!

I've had absolutely no post-surgical issues with it. I haven't been burping, but haven't really needed to.

My surgery was on March 23rd. I didn't even know I had a hiatal hernia, but my dr fixed it! He even gave me a picture of it!

I had one repaired too. Based on other people's posts here, it think there may be a little more pain associated with the repair. Many people on these boards say they didn't have any pain, but I did.

I guess I don't mean pain so much as pressure, but the Lortab allowed me to relax comfortably. I think it was related to the hernia because when I took deep breaths, it slightly hurt (like breathing cold air). Don't be alarmed though, none of this was terrible pain like child birth.

Good luck!

This is exactly my experience. Now I'm almost out of Lortab and I don't want my doctor to think I'm a junkie by asking for more.

Mab, I asked for more the day after I got home from the hospital, because I knew I would run out over the weekend. I was really scared of the pain!

My pharmacist was a little alarmed, but I explained, and then he understood; my doc had no problem with refilling and gave me one additional refill. (I had a total of three prescriptions) And I used it all.

After the first week, I was using it only 2-3 times a day, and at the end of that week, just once in the morning after I arrived at work. (Didn't want to be drowsy driving, and I have a desk job.)

I'm no hero, I just took the pain meds, no need to be uncomfortable with the pain.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
