Really? No Underwires Right After Surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi ladies,

I'm scheduled for surgery next Saturday. I keep reading that ladies won't want to wear underwire bras for a while after the surgery because they'll rub on the incisions. Either my anatomy is very strange or the incisions go between your ribs, or what?

I am tall (5'10") so maybe this is why, but there are 2 to 3 inches between the bottom of my bra and the bottom of any part of my ribcage (more if you measured the roll when sitting - this is why I'm getting the surgery!). So how would it be rubbing on incisions? I don't get it. Do the incisions go a lot higher than I thought? Like I said, they'd have to cut in between my ribs for my bra to rub on it.

Maybe I'm a strange one but I much prefer and am more comfortable in my underwires. I wear them 24/7 except when exercising or in the shower, lol. The only non-underwires I have are my sports bras and those are tight for obvious reasons and the bands on those actually go lower under my boobs. I guess I'll bring one of my looser sports bras just in case but it's hard to imagine that being more comfy than what I'm used to. And I sure don't want to buy new stuff right before starting major weight loss.

Thanks!

My incisions are way below my bra line. I wore a bra in the hospital even.

I had one incision in between my breasts, just below the breast bone that might have been rubbed by some styles of bra, but my underwire was fine. If your current bra doesn't sit there, you should be good to go.

Underwires didn't bother me. Prior to my surgery, I had read on this site to wear a bra with no underwires after surgery for the swallow test....because if your bra has underwires you have to take it off. Thats the only thing I recall reading regarding underwires.

I had one incision below the breast zone that was really bothered by my bra. I wore camisole tanks for at least two weeks which didn't matter because I was home and it was winter so I could wear bulky sweaters.

I had no trouble with my bra after surgery! Of course now I have a bunch of really cute new ones! :-) Something to look forward to! I agree, don't buy things if you can avoid it before surgery. You'll need to replace everything rather quickly.

My highest incision was at least 1 1/2 inches below my bra. I wore an underwire bra home from the hospital the day after surgery. I only wear underwire and I never had an issue with my incisions.

My highest incision is 1.5 inches below where my underwire sits, BUT I was more comfy in a sports bra the first few days because my entire abdomen was swollen and tender. Mine might have been a bit more so because I had hernia repair at the same time. Plus, I'm one who has to hook my bras in front and then rotate them around, and that would definitely have bothered my incision! Anyway, I was back in underwires at one week. No issues now.

I have an incision right between my boobs. I've only worn my bra once and when I did, I put a piece of gauze between my bra and the incision. I was perfectly comfortable. However, getting it on wasn't. I put my bra on like the above poster and that twinged a bit.

Thanks for all your replies! I'll keep it in mind for the swallow test - I'll bring at least one sports bra. I always hook mine in the back, don't have to spin them around so I wonder if putting my arms behind me might hurt, but my husband will be there so if so, I'll have him do it! lol I'm not comfortable without a bra so I'll be putting one on as soon as they let me.

And I'm looking forward to having less back fat so I can fit more and cuter styles. :) I just hope I don't lose too much boobage because I don't have tons to start with. lol

I had more of a problem with the waist bands on my pants than bras. I had a week and a half off before going back to work, so I wore a tank with a shelf bra in it around the house for comfort.

Me too nancy. My bras weren't the issue. The darn waistband was not pleasant. Even scraped my incision had to keep it covered.

Thanks for the mention of waistbands, too! I have several pairs of jammie pants and a couple elastic waist pants. I just hope they'll be loose enough or I can move them up or down to a comfy spot! I booked first class tickets for the flight home so at least I won't be crammed in like a sardine right after surgery. :/

If you'd like some of mine I will share : )

I'm ready to get rid of my big old Amazon lady boobs lol

Bring on a lift and C/D cup implants I'm done...no more DDDs please

If I lose too much tissue I will get implants but even as a teen when I was skinny they were big so I'm hoping a lift will do

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
