I went to my first post op visit yesterday and my doctor told me that I need to increase my Protein and Water intake. I was sleeved on March 30th. Can anyone give me SPECIFIC names of some GOOD protein and Vitamins I can take. He said he prefers I get protein that has at least 45g per serving. HELP!!!!!

My doctor actually recommended Body Fortress whey Protein Powder. You can buy a two pound tub at Walmart for $15. I mix two scoops with 16 ounces of skim milk. I know this seems like a big shake but it takes me 1 to 2 hours to drink it all. I usually do this for my dinner at work. It ends up being 450 calories and 70 grams of Protein. When I add this to my Breakfast and lunch I usually end up getting around 800 - 1000 calories for the day, almost half of which are coming from protein. As far as Vitamins go I am taking Opti Source Post Bariatric Surgery Formula. I just do two in the morning as opposed to the 4 throughout the day. I bought the bottle at the hospital pharmacy for $38. Good Luck!

Try Syntrax Nectars- they have all kinds of flavors- you can buy a sample pack at barriatricpantry.com. They have 23g Protein per pack and can be mixed with as little as 8oz of Water. A drinkable amount in 40 minutes or so and most of the flavors are YUMMY! Also- they have a vanilla, chocolate & cappuchino flavor that you can mix with 8oz of skim milk and up the Protein by 10g.

Isopure has a Gatoraide-like drink that has 40g protein in 20oz... they have a few flavors but I am not a fan of the flavor.

I love my chewable Vitamins from costco. They are like little fruitsnacks and I really dont mind taking them. The only bummer is that even the sugarfree kind has 3 carbs per serving- and since we need lots of Calcium (3 servings/day)... we will have to count them as our carbs. They also have chocolate & carmel flavors, but I havent tried them yet.

Good luck!

I should also mention that after my bottle of Opti Source Vitamins are gone I am going to buy some vita craves at Walmart for $13 a bottle (and you get the same number of pills). That is of course if I still have to take a chewable. If they say I can do a pill then I will buy a bottle of one-a-day men's formula. I feel that $38 dollars is just too much even if they are better vitamins.

I used Centrum chewables both pre and post-op. I just switched, at 7 months, to a Vitamin I have to swallow. As for the Protein, Protein Shakes are the only way to go while on the liquid diet, but I couldn't stand any of the protein shakes early post-op. They were just too sweet for me. I drank a lot of broth, which doesn't have that much protein, but my doc said it was more important to get the liquids in than the protein until I was back on solids.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
